Domestic pepper prices fall sharply, losing high price threshold

Currently, Vietnam's pepper export demand has not improved much, mainly due to weak purchasing power from two major markets, Europe and China. In addition, the continuously fluctuating USD/VND exchange rate has caused many businesses to temporarily suspend large-scale purchasing plans, while waiting for clearer signals from the international financial market.
One notable point is that pepper acreage in key growing regions is recovering, bringing expectations that long-term supply will be stable and may improve in the future. However, in the current context, the market is still quiet and this has made the forecast of pepper prices this week slipping to 140,000 VND/kg become a reality.
According to experts, the key factor determining pepper prices is still supply and demand. Although Vietnam's pepper output is on the decline, farmers tend to hoard their products and are not in a hurry to sell them on the market. This creates a certain advantage for the seller in negotiations, thereby supporting pepper prices in the medium and long term if maintained.
Exporters are also cautiously observing the reciprocal tax policy from the US. The 90-day deadline for the US to announce the final decision is about to end, causing some speculators to take advantage of the situation to "push" prices down to buy goods at lower prices.
Pepper price today June 13 in the world market
In the world market, based on quotes from export enterprises and export prices in various countries, the International Pepper Community (IPC) has updated the prices of pepper of all types traded in the international market on June 12 (local time) as follows:
Indonesia's Lampung black pepper price increased slightly compared to yesterday at 7,526 USD/ton (up 0.17%). In addition, Muntok white pepper price also increased slightly compared to yesterday at 10,167 USD/ton (up 0.18%).
Brazilian black pepper ASTA 570 price remained unchanged from yesterday at $6,175/mt.
Malaysia’s ASTA black pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $9,100/ton. Meanwhile, the country’s ASTA white pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $11,850/ton.
Prices of all types of pepper in Vietnam remained unchanged compared to yesterday. Of which, the price of Vietnamese black pepper 500 gr/l reached 6,300 USD/ton; 550 gr/l reached 6,400 USD/ton.
Similarly, Vietnam's white pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $9,300/ton.
Meanwhile, the US market, which is the largest import partner of Vietnamese pepper, has shown signs of slowing down over the past month. The main reason is price instability due to prolonged trade tensions, weak consumption demand and especially a sharp increase of 125% in transportation costs.
According to data from the Vietnam Pepper and Spices Association, in April 2025, the US imported a total of 6,624 tons of pepper, down slightly by 1.7% compared to the previous month.
Vietnam maintained its position as the largest supplier, accounting for more than 60.9% of the market share with 4,142 tons, up 3.8% compared to March. However, from the beginning of the year to the end of April, Vietnam's export volume to the US reached 17,178 tons, down 19.2% compared to the same period in 2024.
In contrast, some other countries such as Indonesia and India are recording strong export growth to the US. Indonesia increased by 140.5%, reaching 5,371 tons; India increased by 36%, reaching 3,071 tons. This shows that competition in the international pepper market is increasingly fierce, requiring the Vietnamese pepper industry to quickly adjust its strategy to maintain its export position.
