Since the beginning of the year, poultry egg prices have continuously dropped, and consumption has slowed, causing farmers to suffer heavy losses of several million to several tens of millions of dong per day.
Currently, the price of eggs sold to traders at the farm is very low, large duck eggs are only from 1,600 - 1,800 VND/egg, small eggs from 1,400 - 1,600 VND/egg, industrial chicken eggs from 1,200 - 1,400 VND/egg... Meanwhile, according to the calculations of the breeders, the cost of industrial chicken eggs must be from 1,500 - 1,600 VND/egg and duck eggs from 1,800 - 2,000 VND/egg to cover the capital.
Through research, it is known that not only has the price of poultry eggs decreased sharply, but the consumption market has also slowed down. Because information about bird flu is breaking out in many provinces and cities across the country.
In particular, the sensational news about fake eggs appearing on the market has caused confusion among consumers, seriously affecting consumption.
In addition to the supply sources in supermarkets, agricultural and safe food stores, traditional markets, and at the gates of industrial parks and industrial clusters in the province, eggs are packaged and sold everywhere at prices ranging from only 20,000 - 25,000 VND/dozen...
For small traders, the price of poultry eggs has dropped and they are difficult to preserve in the hot weather, so they do not dare to import large quantities for storage. As for livestock farmers, their psychology has been seriously affected by many negative information streams "surrounding" them as well as the pressure of increasing production costs.
Therefore, many farmers have had to choose to reduce their herds, switch to commercial farming or proactively switch from selling eggs to hatching and selling breeding animals to "take short-term profits to support long-term ones", waiting for the market to stabilize again.
Mr. Le Duc Chien's family in Ngoi village, Hoang Dan commune (Tam Duong), with more than 20 years of experience in animal husbandry, is raising 3,000 laying hens and 2,000 commercial ducks.
Every day, Mr. Chien's family's chickens produce nearly 2,000 eggs, but at present they are only sold to traders for 1,300 VND/egg, losing up to several million VND/day. Therefore, Mr. Chien switched to hatching and selling chicks at higher prices to cover the loss and maintain his family's livestock farming activities.
Mr. Chien said: “Currently, the family is selling 30,000 chicks per month; at the same time, maintaining the sale of commercial ducks. This method not only helps reduce production costs to compensate for losses, but also helps maintain a stable herd size.”
The family of Ms. Le Thi Phuong, Dai Dong commune (Vinh Tuong) has been raising quails for 10 years. With 40,000 quails, Ms. Phuong's family earns more than 20,000 eggs per day, but because the price that traders buy quail eggs is often not enough to cover the costs of hiring workers, electricity, water, etc., her family has switched to producing balut quail eggs to sell at a wholesale price of 50,000 VND/100 eggs.
Ms. Phuong said: “Egg prices have never fallen as deeply and for as long as this year. Due to slow consumption, supply exceeding demand, and information about the spread of disease among poultry flocks in many provinces and cities across the country, the monthly output purchased by traders has decreased significantly, significantly affecting my family's income.”
With a farm scale of up to 9,000m2, synchronously invested, closed, raising 70,000 poultry, including 30,000 laying hens, every day, Mr. Phan Van Ngoc's family in Bao Truc residential group, Hop Hoa town (Tam Duong) sells more than 20,000 eggs to the market.
Since the Lunar New Year, egg prices have dropped sharply, causing him to lose tens of millions of dong each day. Mr. Ngoc shared: “Because egg prices have fallen sharply for a long time, my family has switched to hatching eggs to sell breeding chickens. Every month, we sell 140,000 to 160,000 chicks; 150,000 to 200,000 ducks and commercial chickens per quarter to hold out, waiting for egg prices to rise and stabilize again.”
Livestock farming is one of the important industries, bringing significant income to farmers in the province. Faced with the difficulties of farmers, the authorities of many localities in the province have directed sectors and organizations to expand preferential credit loans so that people can continue to maintain their livestock; mobilize traders, cooperatives, and businesses in the area to cooperate and purchase products.
Coordinate with provincial authorities to regularly organize training courses on safe production according to VietGAHP standards, apply technical advances in livestock farming... to help livestock farmers have more opportunities to supply products to supermarkets, agricultural products stores, safe food...
Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hop Hoa Town (Tam Duong) Tran Minh Tien said: People need to stay calm and stabilize the livestock situation, avoiding the case of massive reduction of herds or cessation of farming. In addition, it is necessary to change the production mindset towards synchronous investment from building barns to storage warehouses, creating a stable production - consumption chain.
This not only controls diseases during the farming process but also helps minimize the unstable impact of the market, so that when there are signs of "heating up" again, households will have products available, ensuring supply to the market, bringing in high income.
Besides, the functional sectors in the province need to have more directions and support to help farmers overcome difficult times, maintain their herds, and continue to promote the strengths of the province's key livestock areas.
