Benefits from the Khanh Hoa People Speaking English Program

Not only students and young people, many people in their 60s and 70s still regularly come to community English clubs under the Khanh Hoa People Speaking English Program to participate in learning and improving their knowledge. From the program, the English learning movement has spread widely with many practical, attractive and effective models and activities.

Useful clubs

Every Friday afternoon, the members of the English Club of Nha Trang Ward Women's Union, big and small, attend class regularly and study hard. Ms. Trinh Thi Len, 64 years old, a trader at Xom Moi market, a member of the club, said that her job often involves meeting foreign customers. Previously, because she did not know English, communication and trading were difficult. Since joining the English Club of Nha Trang Ward Women's Union, equipped with basic knowledge, she is now very confident in communicating, exchanging and trading with foreign customers. In addition, she also exchanges knowledge and practices English with her children and grandchildren every day, creating a lively learning atmosphere in the family.

At the age of 71, Mr. Nguyen Huy Tuong (Nha Trang ward) also regularly comes to the English Club to study. Mr. Tuong said that when he was young, he learned English, but at that time, after finishing his studies, he did not use it much, so his knowledge gradually faded away, and he was very hesitant to communicate or use English in daily life. Since joining the English class, he has confidently read and translated words, practiced with his classmates, and boldly communicated with foreigners. Mr. Tuong shared more: "Study more, study forever, studying is never too much. In particular, Khanh Hoa has many foreigners coming to travel and work, so learning English is very necessary to facilitate communication with foreign guests, serve work, and create more income".

English clubs are always active and useful.

At the Dam Market English Club, the learning atmosphere is quite lively and brings many benefits and interesting things. The members of the Club are mostly small traders in Dam Market. From a person who barely knew English, after a short time joining the Club, Ms. Vo Thi Dieu (43 years old, selling handicrafts and souvenirs) has a good vocabulary, making it easier to communicate with foreign customers, thanks to which, her sales work is more favorable. Ms. Dieu shared: “Previously, when selling to foreign customers, I typed the price on my handheld computer to show them, then used Google to look up words and translate meanings to communicate with customers. With that way of doing things, I did not fully understand what the customers wanted, how to bargain, which was very inconvenient. However, since joining the Dam Market English Club, being equipped with basic English, my business and sales work has become much more favorable."

Expand communication opportunities

After nearly 3 years of operation, the Khanh Hoa People Speaking English Program has established 770 English clubs, with about 37,000 members participating regularly every month. The program has mobilized 700 professional volunteers to participate, of which more than 300 volunteers are the core members directly teaching at the clubs. Through evaluation, about 84% of the clubs operate well, regularly every week, typically the English clubs: Students of Nha Trang University, Khanh Hoa University, Pacific University, Central Pedagogical College, Nha Trang College of Tourism, Nha Trang College of Technology, Dam Market, Cu Hin Parish Church, Provincial Police... In addition, there are also online English clubs that operate regularly every week according to a fixed schedule, bringing many practical benefits. Along with that, the establishment of a number of English clubs for disadvantaged people in the community has also achieved many positive results. Typical examples include: Thanh Tam Shelter English Club, Tam Duc Orphanage and Disabled Children English Club. In particular, Bich Dam English Club was established based on the needs and direct proposals of the locality to prepare human resources for sustainable tourism and green tourism in the sea and islands, which has been implemented and achieved many practical results.

English clubs are always attended by people of all ages.

According to the assessment of the Khanh Hoa People Speaking English Project Management Board, the basic English communication skills of club members currently reach 97.95%, with average to good communication levels. This shows that the program is very effective and has a wide reach in the community. Many people, agencies, units, and organizations have clearly recognized and known the benefits of the program, thereby proactively approaching the project management board to propose participating in the program as club members, volunteers, program ambassadors, as well as proposing to open more clubs in their units and localities. To date, nearly 300,000 people have benefited from the program. Through the program, people can improve their English communication skills, actively contributing to cultural exchanges with international friends. In the coming time, relevant levels, sectors and units need to actively coordinate to propose solutions to improve quality and spread the program more strongly in the community.
