The US Dollar Index (DXY) measures the greenback's fluctuations against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF), recording at 102.43 points.
The USD continued to rise in the first week of 2024. The market reassessed expectations for the size of the Federal Reserve's interest rate cuts this year. A cautious mood began to prevail in the market with low trading volumes. Previously, the USD ended 2023 with its first annual decline since 2020.
Minutes from the Fed's December policy meeting showed officials believed inflation was under control. They were also concerned about the risk of over-tightening. However, there was no indication of a time frame for a rate cut. According to the minutes of the December meeting, which were just released, Federal Reserve policymakers judged that continued restraint should be maintained until inflation falls sustainably toward the Federal Open Market Committee's (FOMC) target.
Speculation about the Fed's ability to ease policy has since diminished. "The US economy is in a healthy state. That is the basis for resetting expectations about the Fed's actions," said Amo Sahota, director of foreign exchange consultancy Klarity FX.
The USD is on track for its best weekly performance since June 2022. For the week, the USD gained 1.1%, its best weekly gain since mid-July.
The yen was under pressure as the yen extended its gains to 144.655 per dollar. The euro edged up slightly to 1.09405 per dollar. The common European currency is on track to fall 0.9 percent this week, its biggest weekly decline since early December and snapping a three-week winning streak.
