The US Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the greenback's movements against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF), recorded 102.40 points.
The US dollar index stagnated. New economic data showed that the US producer price index (PPI) unexpectedly fell 0.1% in December 2023, raising expectations that the Federal Reserve will soon cut interest rates.
In addition, the service price index remained unchanged, suggesting inflation will likely weaken in the coming months.
According to the FedWatch tool, the derivatives market sees a 79% chance that the Fed will cut interest rates in March. This level was previously 73%.
“The overall macroeconomic picture is not one that warrants a rate cut, but the market is very excited about it,” said Steve Englander, G10 FX strategist at Standard Chartered Bank in New York.
The US jobs data report for December 2023 released last week also showed strong growth.
The USD Index was up 0.19% at 102.40.
The US currency had previously benefited from risk-off sentiment after the conflict in Yemen escalated.
The Norwegian krone also gained as oil prices climbed due to rising geopolitical tensions.
The euro, one of the areas most affected by higher energy costs, fell 0.15% to 1.09555 EUR/USD.
The Yen exchange rate decreased 0.29% to 144.87 JPY/USD.
