Earlier, both Brent and WTI crude oil rose more than 4% in the first session of the week, after the US and China agreed to deeply cut import tariffs for at least 90 days, a development that also contributed to the rise of Wall Street stocks and the USD.
US President Donald Trump is visiting Saudi Arabia on Tuesday as part of a Middle East tour, where the US also announced a $142 billion defense deal with Riyadh.
Part of Saudi Arabia's new investment package will go to Saudi Aramco's Motiva petrochemical complex in Port Arthur, Texas.
The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has raised output more than expected since April, with May output expected to rise by about 411,000 barrels per day.
Meanwhile, sources told Reuters that Saudi Arabia’s crude oil supplies to China will remain stable in June, after hitting their highest level in more than a year last month thanks to OPEC+’s decision to increase output. Saudi Arabia is currently China’s second-largest crude oil supplier after Russia.
On the demand side, signs generally suggest that demand for refined fuels remains strong.
“Despite the worsening outlook for crude oil consumption, the positive signals from the refined products market cannot be ignored. Although international crude oil prices have fallen 22% since their peak on January 15, refined product prices and refining margins have remained stable,” JPMorgan analysts wrote in a note.
JPMorgan further noted that refining capacity cuts, mainly in the US and Europe, are tightening gasoline and diesel markets, leading to greater reliance on imports and leaving the market vulnerable to unexpected price spikes during maintenance seasons or due to unplanned outages.
