Waste and wastewater treatment solutions in Ben Tre city

BDK - In recent times, Ben Tre City has focused on organizing monitoring, supervision, warning, environmental quality management and waste management in the area under the authority or decentralization of the Provincial People's Committee; environmental improvement and restoration; nature conservation and biodiversity. Strengthening the management and treatment of domestic solid waste in the area, planning, land allocation, calling for investment in infrastructure construction, collection, transportation, recycling, reuse and waste treatment.

Currently, Ben Tre City generates about 140 tons of waste per day, an increase of 13 tons per day compared to last year, mainly bulky waste and domestic waste in construction activities. Of which, the amount of solid waste generated in urban areas is about 82.6 tons per day and the number of households registered for collection is 15,632. In rural areas, it is about 57.4 tons per day with the number of households registered for collection is 7,684. The amount of domestic waste generated in urban areas is more than in rural areas due to the concentration of many households and establishments with commercial, service, and tourism activities with accommodation.

Ben Tre City still maintains and has 630 households participating in the classification of domestic solid waste at source in the form of compost bins according to the program of the Women's Union, reaching a rate of 1.55%; there are 21,186 households performing other classifications of collected and sold recyclable waste, exchanging for trees, reaching 52.11% compared to the total number of households in the city. The models of classifying waste at source, using organic waste to compost into compost with compost bins are still maintained in 10 communes, wards, schools, 2 waste classification points at Ward 7 market, Nhon Thanh market. 14 new women's groups were established to classify waste at households with 285 members; exchanging waste for 568 flower pots to give to poor women's households, union officials as executive committees of self-managed people's groups to display for Tet; mobilized 1,098 women's association members, 150 small traders to use biodegradable bags, biodegradable straws, paper cups, and biodegradable cups in buying and selling, and to self-sort household waste; up to now, 774.5 kg of biodegradable garbage bags have been used... Maintained the Green Club (Phu Hung commune) with 23 members; the model "Turning waste into money" (Ward 6, Phu Khuong ward) and "A house for you" (An Hoi ward). The model "Exchanging plastic waste for trees, biodegradable bags" (An Hoi ward, Phu Khuong ward); the model "Riding a bicycle to propagate" (An Hoi ward, Ward 6, Son Dong commune)...

The volume of waste collection and transportation is 126.42 tons/day. The city's infrastructure is gradually being improved, so the garbage collection route increases every year. The unit carrying out the collection and transportation of solid waste in the city is Ben Tre Urban Construction Joint Stock Company. Of which, the number of equipment serving the collection and transportation is 13 garbage compactors collecting on main roads in the area, 489 modified vehicles collecting garbage in alleys.

Compactor trucks collect and transport garbage from main roads to the waste treatment plant with a frequency of 2 days/time, improved trucks collect and transport garbage in alleys and lanes in the area to garbage transfer stations to stay while waiting for compactor trucks to transport it to An Hiep Landfill, Ba Tri District. In addition, 1 truck is arranged to collect construction waste with a frequency of 2 times/month. Ben Tre City currently has 10 waste transfer stations operating effectively; it is planning to build a waste transfer station in Phu Hung commune, Binh Phu commune and finding a location to build a waste transfer station in My Thanh An commune to move towards no more temporary waste collection points in the city.

“Through actual inspection, most of the facilities and enterprises that generate wastewater and waste that must implement treatment facilities have built facilities according to regulations, reaching 100%. However, regular operation is not guaranteed, some production facilities are not really interested in operating waste treatment systems according to Vietnamese environmental standards. After inspection and handling of administrative violations on the environment, most of the facilities have renovated and operated wastewater and waste treatment facilities in accordance with regulations.”
