Nobel Prize-winning Physics Professor Serge Haroche shares the power of basic science

On the afternoon of October 10, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology - Vietnam National University (VNU) organized a scientific talk with Professor Serge Haroche, French theoretical physicist, winner of the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physics. The event attracted nearly 1,000 students, lecturers and Odon Vallet scholarship recipients, creating a vibrant academic atmosphere and strongly inspiring the young community of science lovers.

With the theme “From Light to Quantum: The Power of Basic Science”, Professor Haroche shared his more than half a century of research in the field of photonics and quantum physics, where the fundamental principles of light, waves and electromagnetic radiation have become the basis for many modern technological breakthroughs.

Professor Haroche stressed that it is fundamental science that is at the root of all progress, opening the door to future technologies such as quantum computers, quantum sensors and secure communications.

Professor Haroche shared his research journey of more than half a century in the field of photonics and quantum physics with nearly 1,000 students of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology - VNU.

“Basic science is not only a storehouse of knowledge but also a spirit of continuous exploration . When we ask questions and persistently seek answers, that is when science moves forward,” Professor Haroche shared.

The work of Professor Serge Haroche and his colleague David J. Wineland, who were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2012, has opened a new era for modern quantum physics, helping people to observe and control light and matter at the quantum level for the first time. This achievement lays the foundation for the development of cutting-edge technologies in the 21st century.

Quantum technology has been identified by Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology - VNU as one of the six key scientific pillars in its development strategy until 2030, along with artificial intelligence, biomedical engineering, renewable energy, new materials and environmental technology. The school is focusing on building interdisciplinary research groups, expanding international cooperation and training high-quality human resources, aiming to form an ecosystem for research and application of quantum technology in Vietnam.
