With a compact design, easy to use, no need for a driver's license... electric bicycles are gradually becoming a popular means of transportation for students to go to school. However, recently, the situation of students modifying electric bicycles, arbitrarily changing the structure to make them more beautiful, run faster... is becoming a dangerous trend, posing a potential risk of traffic accidents.
Records at some schools in Dong Nai show that many students ride modified electric bicycles to school.
Modified electric bike running 60-70km/h
Recently, on October 8, the traffic police force coordinated with Dong Phu Commune Police to check the situation of students riding modified electric bicycles to school.
Accordingly, at the area outside the gate of Tan Lap Secondary School (Dong Phu commune, Dong Nai province), the authorities discovered two modified electric bicycles belonging to two students.
The authorities asked the students to call their parents to directly warn them. At the same time, the parents had to take the vehicles to have all the modified parts removed and return them to their original condition.
Next, the authorities suddenly inspected the parking area of Tan Phu Secondary School and discovered 3 more modified electric bicycles.
In particular, a student said that after being modified, his electric bike can reach a speed of 60-70 km/h.
H., a student at Tan Phu Secondary School, admitted to modifying the wheels, forks, IC and battery of his electric bicycle. Despite his family's advice, H. still spent his breakfast money to modify his bicycle to his liking.
According to the Board of Directors of Tan Phu Secondary School, since the beginning of the school year, the school has required parents to sign a commitment that students use electric bicycles in accordance with regulations and wear helmets when coming to school. However, with more than 1,000 electric bicycles belonging to students, it is very difficult to control all the modified bicycles.
Mr. Son, the owner of an electric bicycle shop in Dong Phu commune, said that in the past, students often brought their electric bicycles to repair and sell shops to modify and change the structure according to their preferences.
However, nowadays students can buy accessories online such as accelerator ICs, batteries, accumulators, etc. and watch instructions on social networks to assemble them themselves. To avoid school regulations that do not allow modified vehicles in school, students park their vehicles outside.

Potential risk of accidents from modified electric bicycles
According to Dong Nai Province Police, students modifying electric bicycles by removing pedals, replacing batteries with high-power motors, removing speed limiters, etc. is a worrying situation that poses many potential risks, especially when students do not have enough skills to handle traffic situations, endangering themselves and other road users.
In fact, in recent times, there have been a number of accidents involving modified electric bicycles. Many students ride electric bicycles carrying 2-3 people, without helmets, and use their phones while riding, leading to serious traffic collisions, even causing extremely serious consequences.
"If there are no sanctions or strict measures between parents, schools and police forces, this situation tends to become more complicated, causing serious accidents, threatening the property, health and lives of students and traffic participants," Dong Nai Police informed.

Also according to Dong Nai Provincial Police, national technical regulations stipulate that electric bicycles have a maximum capacity of 250W, a maximum speed of 25km/h, a maximum weight of 40kg and must have pedals.
When the engine, battery or pedals are changed, the vehicle is no longer considered an electric bicycle, but is classified as an electric motorbike or electric motorcycle, with stricter management regulations.
More worryingly, modified electric bicycles can run up to 50-70km/h, even more than 100km/h, equivalent to motorbikes, but the braking system and frame are not designed to withstand loads at high speeds.
In addition, installing large capacity batteries, fast charging or manual wiring can cause short circuits or fires while in traffic or during charging, directly threatening life and property.
Absolutely do not modify electric bicycles.
Dong Nai police determined that modifying electric bicycles is not only a violation of the law but also a direct cause of traffic insecurity, threatening the lives of the drivers themselves and the community.
Schools, teachers, parents and all students need to seriously comply with and promote awareness of legal regulations on road traffic order and safety related to driving electric bicycles.
Absolutely do not modify electric bicycles, do not change the motor or battery without permission; wear a standard helmet when riding a bicycle or electric motorbike... This is not only a legal responsibility but also a practical action to protect the students.
