Preserving the characteristics of traditional houses

Việt NamViệt Nam21/03/2024

For generations, the ethnic people of Lai Chau have been preserving and promoting the value of cultural identity. In particular, the traditional house architecture of the ethnic groups: Thai, Lao, Lu, Mong, Dao, Ha Nhi... has been preserved by the people over time. Currently, the stilt houses, wooden houses, and rammed earth houses in the villages have become one of the attractive tourism products attracting visitors with the name "homestay".

Coming to the villages: Cang Muong, La Muong, Co Noi in Muong Cang commune (Than Uyen district), we saw many traditional stilt houses of the Thai people being preserved. Mr. Nung Van Tien in Cang Muong village shared: As a Thai ethnic group, we are proud of our national cultural identity. In particular, the stilt house style was designed by generations of fathers and grandfathers, passed down from generation to generation. In 2011, when renovating the house, my family kept the original architecture; raised the lower floor and used the floor space for rice, furniture, and a place for the children to play. The staircase is designed more beautifully, with handrails. In addition, we arranged the kitchen space as a separate area instead of using the last room in the house like in the past.
According to Mr. Nguyen Tu Trong - Chairman of Muong Cang Commune People's Committee, the commune currently has 1,425 households, mainly Thai ethnic people. Of which, nearly 70% of households maintain the traditional houses of the Thai ethnic people. The Party Committee, government, and mass organizations of the commune actively promote and encourage households to maintain the original architecture of their houses and use new materials to build houses suitable for their living conditions and space.
Every time we work in the districts of Phong Tho, Tam Duong, Sin Ho, Muong Te... and visit the villages, we are proud and impressed by the cultural characteristics of the 20 ethnic groups in the province. Just like costumes, languages, writings, music , folk performing arts... each ethnic group has different housing architecture. If the Thai, Lao, Lu, Cong, Mang people have stilt houses, the Mong, Dao, Ha Nhi, Si La people have ground-floor houses, wooden walls, and rammed earth houses.

Traditional stilt house architecture has been preserved over time by the Thai, Lao and Lu ethnic groups in the province.

Mr. Vang A Chinh - Head of Sin Suoi Ho village (Sin Suoi Ho commune, Phong Tho district) excitedly said: The unique feature in the architecture of the Mong ethnic house is 3 rooms with 2 doors; the bedrooms of the couple and children are arranged separately. Mong houses all have a mezzanine floor to store belongings, food, and provisions to limit mold. We are happy that nowadays, the traditional houses of the Mong people are loved by tourists, especially foreign tourists. In the village, there are 22 households providing "homestay" resort services to serve the needs of guests. To attract guests to stay, households in the village decorate the welcome gate beautifully, clean the house; and create a landscape around the house.
Over the years, the traditional houses of ethnic minorities have always been cared for, preserved and conserved by all levels, sectors, localities and people in the province in association with the implementation of housing criteria in the National Target Program on New Rural Development. Along with that, the province has chosen to restore the architectural space of traditional houses of ethnic minorities, contributing to preserving and promoting the unique cultural values of each ethnic group in association with tourism development.
Mr. Deo Van Duong - Head of the Department of Culture and Information of Phong Tho district said: Implementing Resolution 59-NQ/HDND of the Provincial People's Council promulgating regulations on a number of policies to support the preservation and promotion of fine traditional cultural identities of ethnic groups associated with tourism development in the province in the period of 2021 - 2025, in the district, there are 2 tourist villages: Sin Suoi Ho, Vang Pheo which are supported to renovate and repair houses according to traditional house architecture. Accordingly, each village has 10 households providing homestay services and is supported with a budget of no more than 160 million VND/household.
The whole province has supported the renovation and repair of 35 houses in traditional housing architecture according to Resolution 59 in community tourism villages: Sin Suoi Ho village, Sin Suoi Ho commune and Vang Pheo village, Muong So commune (Phong Tho district); Tham village, Ban Hon commune and Si Thau Chai village, Ho Thau commune (Tam Duong district); San Thang village, San Thang commune ( Lai Chau city). Implementing Resolution No. 04-NQ/TU of the Provincial Party Committee on preserving and promoting the fine traditional cultural identities of ethnic groups associated with tourism development in the period of 2021-2025, with a vision to 2030, in the districts of Than Uyen, Muong Te, and Tam Duong, the restoration of the architectural space of traditional houses of 11 ethnic groups, including the Ha Nhi, La Hu, Si La, Mang, Cong, Kho Mu, Dao, Giay, Lu, Lao, and Mong, has been organized.
Traditional houses are considered a cultural treasure because they contain customs, beliefs; are places for living, cultural and artistic exchange; display ethnic costumes, and production tools of each ethnic group. Over the centuries, the ethnic groups of Lai Chau have constantly created and innovated to improve traditional houses to suit living conditions, production, and tourism services, but have not forgotten to preserve the characteristics of traditional houses of the nation.
