Farmers in Tam Duong district harvest sturgeon.
The livestock and crop farming model of Mr. Thao A Nu's family in Say San 1 village (Nung Nang commune), previously planted one crop of corn and rice and raised small livestock, with low economic efficiency. Taking advantage of the potential, strengths, land, and water resources, in recent years, he has boldly invested in building solid barns to raise and fatten commercial buffaloes for meat in the direction of goods instead of letting them roam freely as before. Every year, he buys skinny buffaloes to fatten and sell 6, bringing high economic efficiency to the family.
Not stopping there, in 2016, Mr. Nu received support from the Provincial, District and Commune Farmers' Associations for seeds and fertilizers; and guidance on converting ineffective corn fields to growing VH6 pear trees, which brings high economic efficiency. Currently, his family has over 300 pear trees in harvest season, with crispy, sweet, juicy fruits, earning 70 - 80 million VND per year. Thanks to the conversion of crop and livestock structure, last year, his family earned 150 million VND.
Tam Duong has potential, advantages, many natural clean water streams, suitable for the living conditions of cold-water fish. In recent times, the district and commune authorities have encouraged people to convert low-yield agricultural land to expand the area for cold-water fish farming according to the plan. People take full advantage of the natural conditions of abundant water sources of the streams to invest in building a system of cold-water fish farming tanks distributed throughout the communes: Son Binh, Ho Thau, Ban Bo, Khun Ha. Up to now, the district has 366 tanks with a volume of 32,500m3 for raising cold-water fish. Each year, the district supplies the market with more than 300 tons of commercial sturgeon and salmon, contributing to increasing people's income.
Before each crop season, every year, the District People's Committee directs communes and towns to step up propaganda and mobilize people to change the structure of crops and livestock, and introduce high-quality, high-yield plants and breeds into intensive farming. In particular, focusing on organizing the connection of "4 houses", including farmers, the state, scientists and businesses, to create commodity products, helping people know how to apply science and technology to livestock and crop farming, increase value and ensure output for products.

Up to now, the district has planned a concentrated production area, specializing in 600 hectares of rice with 2 crops per year, over 700 hectares of macadamia trees, nearly 400 hectares of temperate fruit trees and over 300 hectares of cassava. In particular, the district has attracted 9 enterprises, 6 cooperatives, 3 craft villages to carry out investment linkages in agriculture and build and promote the effectiveness of the product brands "Tam Duong Tea", "Binh Lu cassava vermicelli"; maintain and develop 39 OCOP products.
For livestock and poultry farming, the District Agricultural Service Center coordinates with communes and towns to organize training courses and transfer science and technology to help livestock farmers master methods of selecting breeds, controlling diseases and optimizing care processes. Currently, the district has 58 concentrated livestock farms, with a total herd of 39,100 animals, and a herd growth rate of 7.2% per year.

Talking to us, Mr. Phong Vinh Cuong - Vice Chairman of Tam Duong District People's Committee said: "Thanks to farmers actively converting the structure of crops and livestock, the district currently has many effective economic models, contributing to increasing income and productivity on the same unit of land area. Up to now, the average income per capita of the whole district has reached over 36 million VND/person/year; the annual poverty rate has decreased by 4-5%".
With the above results of crop and livestock restructuring, we believe that in the coming time, the district will continue to successfully implement the goals and tasks set out in the Resolution of the Party Congress at all levels for the 2020-2025 term, especially the income and poverty reduction targets. Thereby, improving the material and spiritual life of the people to build the homeland of Tam Duong increasingly rich and beautiful.
