Dangerous winds threaten to fan Los Angeles wildfires

(Dan Tri) - Los Angeles firefighters (California, USA) are preparing to respond to strong winds from the beginning of this week that threaten to make forest fires more serious.

The US National Weather Service has warned of "particularly dangerous" conditions for wildfires in Los Angeles as dry Santa Ana winds of 72-112km/h are forecast to develop and last from January 13 to January 15.

Winds of such intensity can easily cause extreme combustion in ongoing fires or turn any new spark into an "inferno".

Winds began to pick up on January 13, but the strongest and most worrying winds are expected today, January 14.

Los Angeles is dealing with what is considered one of the most devastating natural disasters in U.S. history. The fires have killed at least 24 people over the past week, burned more than 10,000 hectares of forest and residential areas, and forced the evacuation of more than 150,000 people.

Some 8,500 firefighters are working to put out the fire, but the effort is hampered by limited water supplies and extreme weather.
