During his visit and work in Lao Cai on January 6, 2013, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong visited and learned about the actual situation in Ban Lau commune, Muong Khuong district. Here, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong suggested: "The Party Committee and People of Muong Khuong district continue to promote the advantages of the locality, boost commodity production, and improve competitiveness. To do so, we must pay attention to developing human resources, promoting the application of advances - science and technology in production...".

The words of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong at that time were both a suggestion and a direction for Ban Lau commune in particular and Muong Khuong district in general to see the importance of "promoting local advantages, boosting commodity production, improving competitiveness...", especially for localities that take agricultural production as the mainstay for socio -economic development like Muong Khuong.

Taking note of the direction of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, over the past 10 years, the Party Committee, government and people of Ban Lau commune in particular and Muong Khuong district in general have made efforts and focused on developing commodity agricultural production. From a difficult commune in the border area, Ban Lau has strongly risen, becoming a bright spot in the development of commodity agricultural production in the mountainous district of Muong Khuong. Up to now, the whole Ban Lau commune has more than 1,000 hectares of pineapple, over 600 hectares of tea, 400 hectares of cinnamon and a Seng Cu specialty rice production area of ​​over 100 hectares... Commodity agriculture brings in tens of billions to hundreds of billions of VND in income for farmers in Ban Lau commune every year.

From the bright spot of Ban Lau, the emulation movement for commodity agricultural production has developed widely in localities in Muong Khuong district. Muong Khuong district has also become the leading flag in the development of commodity agriculture in the province. The whole district currently has over 7,700 hectares of production area for commodity crops (bananas, pineapples, tea, etc.). In the first 6 months of 2024 alone, the whole district had 601 hectares of bananas, with a harvest output of 4,363 tons, worth 23.3 billion VND; 1,657 hectares of pineapples, with a harvest output of 35,164 tons, worth 249.9 billion VND; 5,456 hectares of tea, with a harvest output of 20,095 tons of fresh tea buds, worth 144.3 billion VND...

In addition, the Party Committee, government and people of all ethnic groups in Muong Khuong district also strive to compete and develop other key industries such as: developing forestry production, hill and forest economy in the direction of exploiting wood combined with developing non-timber forest products; developing pig farming and developing potential crops (tangerine, chili, Seng cu rice, temperate fruit trees, etc.); attracting investment in the field of preliminary processing and processing to increase the value of agricultural production.

Mr. Le Thanh Hoa, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Muong Khuong district, shared: Focusing on developing agricultural commodities with 6 key industries and potential industries has contributed significantly to increasing farmers' income in the district. The agricultural sector will continue to advise on further developing agriculture in the direction of commodity production, safety, improving product quality and value, and attracting investors to build processing facilities and link to consume agricultural commodities in a sustainable manner.

From the bright spots of Ban Lau commune and Muong Khuong district, the development of commodity agriculture has spread throughout the province. Commodity agricultural production has become a strategy that the Standing Committee of Lao Cai Provincial Party Committee attaches importance to and concretizes in Resolution No. 10 on the Strategy for Commodity Agricultural Development in Lao Cai Province to 2030, with a vision to 2050, making commodity agricultural production a driving force for sustainable agricultural development.

The whole province currently has 4,246 hectares of medicinal plants (1,031 hectares of annual medicinal plants, 3,215 hectares of perennial medicinal plants); 8,295 hectares of tea plants (of which 5,767 hectares are commercial tea plants); 2,077 hectares of banana plants; 2,221 hectares of pineapple plants; 60,487 hectares of cinnamon plants; a herd of 452,500 pigs; a concentrated forest wood material area serving forest product processing of over 92,200 hectares. In addition, localities in the province also focus on sustainable economic development under the forest canopy, through the development of trees with high economic value such as cinnamon, tung, bodhi... and trees providing secondary forest products such as various types of bamboo shoots, medicinal plants under the forest canopy... It is estimated that the value of agricultural commodity production in the province in 2024 will reach about 5,000 billion VND.

In the first 6 months of 2024, the production value of key industries in the province reached about 2,667 billion VND. Of which, some key industries achieved high value, such as: hill and forest economy reached 836 billion VND; pig farming reached 775 billion VND; cinnamon reached 384 billion VND; pineapple reached 250 billion VND; tea reached 185 billion VND; medicinal plants reached 180 billion VND...

Regarding agricultural commodity production in the province, Mr. Do Van Duy, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of the province affirmed: The agricultural sector of Lao Cai province will continue to pay attention to and develop agricultural commodities in the direction of linking value chains; increase the application of science and technology in production; focus on developing agricultural commodity production areas that meet quality standards, organic certification, and traceability; attract deep processing to increase product value, meeting the increasing demand of the domestic and export markets.

With the vision, strategic thinking, and very specific instructions and suggestions of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong on agricultural commodity production during his visit and work in Lao Cai province more than 10 years ago, it will forever be the orientation for Lao Cai agriculture to have long and steady steps forward in the future.
