With the Pixel Fold, Google will challenge Samsung in the foldable smartphone market, which the Korean company currently dominates. According to internal plans obtained by CNBC , Google plans to introduce the device at its annual Google I/O developer conference on May 10 and sell it a month later.
The Pixel Fold, codenamed Felix internally, has the “most durable hinge” of any foldable smartphone. It costs up to $1,700, competing with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 ($1,799).
Google will promote the Pixel Fold’s water resistance and compactness, as well as its 5.8-inch external display. The device opens like a book, revealing a 7.6-inch display inside, the same size as its Samsung rival, according to images in the document. It weighs 283 grams, and has a larger battery that lasts for 24 hours and 72 hours in low power mode. The Pixel Fold’s chip is the Tensor G2, the same chip that was in last year’s Pixel 7 and 7 Pro.
While hardware is a small part of Google’s revenue, the Pixel Fold is the company’s most expensive smartphone ever. It’s a chance to show what a foldable Google phone experience is like. Other Pixel phones also have exclusive features not found on regular Android phones, like advanced photo editing.
Google will unveil the Pixel Fold as its relationship with Samsung comes under question. Earlier this week, shares of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, fell 3.5% after media reports said Samsung was considering ditching Google’s search engine for Microsoft’s Bing on its smartphones.
According to the document, Google will offer incentives to convince people to switch to the Pixel Fold, such as trading in an old Pixel, iPhone or Android phone. The company will also give away a Pixel Watch to buyers.
