Hanoi: Nearly 1,900 AI cameras will calculate traffic flow to change light cycles accordingly

(Chinhphu.vn) - Nearly 1,900 AI cameras will be put into synchronous operation from December 2025 throughout Hanoi. In addition to the violation recognition feature, AI cameras are integrated with the function of automatically measuring traffic volume at intersections, transmitting data in real time to control optimal traffic light cycles.

On the morning of October 23, 2025, the Traffic Police Department of Hanoi City Police continued to install a camera system integrated with artificial intelligence (AI) at the Pham Hung - Khuat Duy Tien intersection.

The AI ​​camera system is equipped with many modern features such as 360-degree scanning, clearly identifying objects, phenomena, and subjects at a distance of 500-700m, operating stably in all weather conditions and harsh environments. These cameras are arranged at key routes, intersections, central areas, and gateways to the City to serve the work of traffic management and monitoring and ensuring urban security and order.

The highlight of the system is the ability to process and analyze images directly at the camera (edge ​​processing), helping to quickly identify traffic violations and behaviors related to security and order; at the same time, send data to the center for comparison and analysis with the common database. This solution helps increase accuracy, reduce latency, save server resources at the center, and at the same time allows flexible expansion of the number of cameras in the future.

In particular, 1,873 AI cameras are integrated with the function of automatically measuring traffic volume at intersections, transmitting data in real time to control optimal traffic light cycles. Thereby, the system helps reduce congestion, shorten red light waiting time and improve the efficiency of smart traffic management.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Dao Viet Long, Deputy Head of the Traffic Police Department - Hanoi City Police: "Putting into operation the system of 1,873 AI cameras from December 2025 is an important step in the digital transformation roadmap of the Capital Traffic Police force. Compared to conventional surveillance camera systems, AI cameras have the ability to analyze and process images right on the device, helping to quickly and accurately detect violations of traffic order and safety as well as situations related to security and order in the area."

The system is also capable of recognizing vehicle license plates, supporting the tracking of vehicles involved in security and order incidents, traffic accidents, contributing to the construction of smart cities, safe, civilized and modern traffic.

Along with the installation of AI cameras, on the morning of October 23, the authorities also organized maintenance and repair of the traffic light system, ensuring the system operates stably and synchronously, effectively serving the management and operation of traffic throughout the capital.
