Prensa Latina news agency commented that the decision to launch negotiations on a trade agreement including tariff issues has opened an "iron door" in economic and trade relations between Vietnam and the US.

The article “Vietnam opens the ‘steel door’ in trade relations with the US” published on April 11 emphasized that Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc, Special Envoy of General Secretary To Lam , and the Vietnamese Special Working Group have successfully completed the tasks and goals assigned by the leaders of the Party, State, and Government of Vietnam.

According to the Latin American news agency, the most outstanding achievement in the recent days of intense negotiations was that the Vietnam Special Working Group convinced the US side to agree to negotiate a bilateral trade agreement - an issue that Washington had repeatedly avoided in the past.

Prensa Latina highlighted the fact that Vietnam and the US officially agreed to negotiate tariffs and affirmed that this is the "most important pillar" of the above agreement.

In the coming days, the Vietnamese Government will consider establishing a ministerial-level technical negotiating group to concretize the results achieved by the Special Working Group.

In a recent meeting with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who was appointed as the head of the delegation to negotiate a bilateral trade agreement with Vietnam, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc affirmed that Vietnam is ready for discussions.

He suggested that the two sides soon discuss specific contents to reach an agreement as soon as possible, contributing to promoting stable and sustainable development of bilateral economic and trade relations, meeting the interests of the people and businesses of the two countries.

For his part, Mr. Bessent expressed his gratitude to Vietnam for promptly implementing positive measures to resolve issues of concern to the US, and highly appreciated the agreement to negotiate a bilateral trade agreement.

Prensa Latina stressed Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's direction that negotiations with the US must be placed within the overall framework of relations between the two countries, as well as global connections, including 17 free trade agreements that Vietnam has signed.

According to this regional news agency, Vietnam and the US will negotiate a trade agreement in the spirit of Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, based on mutual respect, aiming at appropriate solutions for a fair and sustainable trade, bringing benefits to the people and businesses of both sides./.
