Practical action for a green future

(Baothanhhoa.vn) - As scheduled, in recent days, many localities and agencies have organized activities in response to World Environment Day (June 5) and the Month of Action for the Environment. However, the reality is that environmental pollution, especially plastic waste pollution, is still a pressing problem for life, threatening the future development of the country.

Let's not talk about big problems like the large amount of plastic waste from production facilities being thrown into the environment without proper treatment. In daily life, families throw at least a few plastic bags into the environment every day without knowing what will happen to them. Meanwhile, items such as bags, cups, plates, knives, straws... made from environmentally friendly materials to replace plastic products are almost being turned away by consumers. It can be said that the "green lifestyle", although being promoted and recommended a lot, is still losing out to the fast, pragmatic and selfish way of life. In Vietnam, statistics show that about 1.8 million tons of plastic waste are generated each year, but only less than 30% is recycled, the rest is buried or burned, causing serious environmental pollution.

In recent years, we have issued many documents such as the Law on Environmental Protection 2020, decrees, circulars, and decisions on the environmental field. In Thanh Hoa , the 18th Provincial Party Committee also issued Resolution No. 05-NQ/TU on strengthening the Party's leadership in environmental protection. It can be said that a relatively complete and synchronous legal framework has been created to restore order in the environmental field. This is a great effort, but only after the promulgated policy receives responsible and drastic responses from the whole society and is closely monitored by the authorities, will the policy truly bring into play its value in practice.

To spread the “green lifestyle”, we cannot rely on just one media campaign or one highlight, but must be a regular, continuous story with appropriate and flexible methods. In which, we must mobilize the responsible participation of the people with the mindset of being both the subject and the beneficiary.

In 2025, the United Nations chose the theme of World Environment Day as "Fighting Plastic Pollution". This is a timely message, showing urgency and globality. Responding to World Environment Day on June 5 and the Month of Action for the Environment this year is an opportunity for us to once again look back at the current state of environmental pollution and the alarm, to have more motivation and determination to eliminate the fast, pragmatic, irresponsible lifestyle, and switch to a "green lifestyle" - a lifestyle of civilization, sustainability and responsibility for the environment, for the green future of the country. Instead of responding for the sake of it, each person and each agency should change their mindset and responsibility towards the environment, especially the habit of using disposable plastic items and handling plastic waste with practical and drastic actions.
