Sharing at the discussion "Enterprises in the digital age: Marks of creation and global integration" on October 8, Mr. Pham Quang Hieu, Deputy Head of Environmental Technology Department, Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), said that this unit is applying many technologies in the steps of check-in, security check, and boarding.
According to him, one of the technologies that will be applied here is modern security screening equipment, which helps passengers not to take off their shoes or remove liquids and electronic devices from their carry-on luggage. This technology will be applied soonest at Long Thanh International Airport.
According to the current security check process, passengers must take off their shoes, put their phones, laptops... in trays for scanning when passing through the security gate. Mr. Hieu explained the reason is because the scanners at airports are of old technology generation, low resolution, difficult to observe details and identify complex objects.

Previously, in a notable sharing in August, Mr. Dang Hong Anh - Chairman of the Vietnam Young Entrepreneurs Association - proposed that old-style security check procedures such as taking off shoes and belts at the airport should be abolished.
Mr. Hong Anh estimates that each passenger spends 3 to 4 minutes taking off shoes, belts, watches or coats, and the total wasted time in a year could amount to more than 7 million hours of work. If converted to the current minimum wage, the economy could lose nearly 150 billion VND each year just because of suboptimal procedures.
Meanwhile, he said many airports around the world have eliminated manual screening processes thanks to investment in modern screening technologies.
He cited that in the US, the Transportation Security Administration has implemented the TSA PreCheck priority screening program, which allows pre-registered passengers to pass through security without removing their shoes, belts, or removing electronic devices from their luggage. The average time to complete security procedures under this program is just under 10 minutes.
Major airports in Europe are also using CT scanner technology to check carry-on luggage without requiring passengers to remove liquids or laptops.
In Asia, Changi Airport in Singapore also applies a new generation of smart security control system, combining artificial intelligence and modern sensors, allowing quick processing while still ensuring absolute safety.
According to a survey by Dan Tri reporters, some opinions stated that taking off shoes and belts has long been a custom, and for them this is not a problem. The remaining opinions tend to want to simplify the procedure, similar to many airports in the world in general and the region in particular, when going through airport security, people do not have to take off shoes and belts.
In fact, at airports in the US, Canada, and Europe, passengers were once required to take off their shoes for inspection. In recent years, with the development of technology, this procedure has been gradually abolished.
Recently, after two decades of application, the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced that the Department of Homeland Security has issued a new policy, allowing passengers to wear shoes when going through security checkpoints.
TSA has reportedly notified industry stakeholders of the change. Passengers enrolled in TSA’s PreCheck program are exempt from removing their shoes and can keep laptops and other electronic devices in their luggage while going through the checkpoint.
