VTC NewsVTC News18/09/2024

Vegetable prices have been increasing continuously for many days, each market has different prices and all are sky high, making many housewives feel sorry.
After the impact of typhoon Yagi and flooding, many areas in Hanoi were severely flooded, leading to scarcity of goods and sharp price increases, especially for vegetables.

The price of green vegetables at Ve market, Dong Ngac ward (Bac Tu Liem, Hanoi) has increased rapidly.

Ms. Thuy Quynh, a resident of Dong Ngac ward (Bac Tu Liem, Hanoi) said: "Although I was sure that the price of green vegetables would increase, when I went to the market I was still shocked because I didn't think the price of green vegetables would increase that much. Some types increased 3-4 times more than usual. Eating vegetables now is more expensive than eating meat" . "I only dared to buy 2 tomatoes to cook with meat. Normally it is only about 25,000 VND/kg, but today the seller said it was 40,000 VND. That's 2,000 - 3,000 VND/tomato. 5,000 VND for onions but only 3 stalks, and if I don't buy quickly, they will be gone" , she added.

A bunch of water spinach costs 20,000 VND.

Mr. Tuan Tu, who also lives in this area, said: “On the way to pick up my child from school, I stopped by the market to buy a bunch of water spinach as my wife told me. The seller said the price was 20,000 VND/bunch. If this situation continues, my salary may only be enough to buy vegetables.” According to a survey by VTC News, the Ve market, located on Ke Ve street (Dong Ngac ward), has a lower price level for green vegetables than in the center of Hanoi. In this area, people still grow their own green vegetables and continuously supply a quantity of goods to the market. However, after the flood caused by Typhoon Yagi passed, the price of green vegetables in this market “danced wildly”, each day with a different price, each item with a different price, it can be said that the price is “chaotic”. For example, a bunch of water spinach in this market is sold for 12,000 - 15,000 VND/bunch, some are sold for 18,000 VND/bunch, the highest is 20,000 VND/bunch. Although the size is different, after picking, a bunch of water spinach can only be eaten by a family for one meal. Ms. Hien, a resident of Dong Ngac ward, honestly said: "My family grows water spinach, if I know someone, I sell it for 10,000 VND/bunch. If I don't know someone, I sell it for 12,000 VND/bunch." She said that the price has increased by 3,000 - 5,000 VND per bunch because before the storm, she sold a bunch of water spinach for only 7,000 VND. Although the price is much higher than before, Ms. Hien does not feel happy but is more worried. “Imported vegetables are sold, the supply increases, so the selling price must also increase. As for the vegetables I grow, they are not imported but the price still increases. The reason is because most of the 2 sao of vegetable fields in my family are still submerged in water. The water spinach is still alive but submerged deeply, cannot be picked and sold, there is too little supply so the price has increased. The fields of mustard greens are submerged in water, probably rotten, losing money. I bought those mustard greens for 200,000 VND for seeds, before the flood I could only sell them for 60,000 VND, not to mention the labor of taking care of them, waiting for months,” said Ms. Hien.

Holding a bunch of dill that cost 5,000 VND, Mrs. Dung said there were 5 dill plants, meaning each plant cost 1,000 VND.

Ms. Dung, a vegetable vendor at the entrance of Ve market, said that green onions are currently the item with the most terrible price increase, 10,000 VND/tael, or 100,000 VND/kg. According to Ms. Dung, all types of vegetables are increasing, increasing a little bit every day. Since the flood, the price of green vegetables has increased every day, there has not been a single day when it has decreased. Regarding the reason why the price of green vegetables is so chaotic, Mr. Nguyen Van Toan, a vegetable vendor at Ve market, explained: "When the goods are imported, the price is already high, the rain and flood water make the leaves rotten and crushed. Depending on the amount of rotten and crushed vegetables, each store adjusts a different price to avoid losses, but also does not take any more money from the people" , Mr. Toan said, pointing to the pile of crushed and crushed vegetables next to his stall. Mr. Toan said that mustard greens are a type of vegetable that has increased in price at a dizzying rate. The price of this type of cabbage at Ve market is currently 50,000 VND/kg, while previously the price was only about 25,000 - 30,000 VND/kg. "But now there is no stock to sell. Every day we can only import a few bunches, and they are gone in half a morning."

Currently, to buy a bunch of any green vegetable, consumers have to spend at least 10,000 VND. This is the minimum price for new green vegetables that has been established in many areas in Hanoi.

The continuous increase in vegetable prices has made Mr. Toan and many small traders here worried. They said that they did not benefit from the increase in vegetable prices, but were only maintaining their business to avoid losses. Although not all markets were flooded after the storm, the impact of increasing vegetable prices and scarce goods affected most markets in Hanoi. Mr. Nguyen Tu, a small trader at Nam Du market, Linh Nam area (Hoang Mai, Hanoi) said: "Right after the storm passed, the price of green vegetables did not increase because there was still a lot of inventory. But after a few days, we had to import vegetables at a different price every day, the price of the next day was higher than the previous day, we do not know when the increase will last." Mr. Tu said that the cheapest is cabbage, this vegetable is readily available and fresh. The average price is only about 16,000 - 18,000 VND/kg. But now it has increased to 20,000 VND/kg. “Moreover, vegetables rot very quickly these days. In the morning, we pick out the damaged leaves when we receive the goods, and in the afternoon, we pick them out again. Sometimes we have to pick them out three times a day. The quantity is reduced, and if we don’t increase the selling price, we will only lose money.”

Prices of vegetables and fruits in most markets in Hanoi have increased.

This situation also occurs in traditional markets in the central area of Hanoi. Mr. Thuan, a trader at Thai Ha market (Dong Da, Hanoi) said that in this market, sweet potato leaves have increased from 6,000 - 7,000 VND to 12,000 - 13,000 VND/bunch. Malabar spinach has increased from 10,000 VND/bunch to 13,000 VND/bunch. Only some other foods that can be stored for a long time such as squash, pumpkin, potatoes, and taro have remained stable in price as before the storm. Pork, beef, fish, etc. in this market are also stable.
