Paralyzed in both legs since childhood, Mr. Nguyen Van Sinh (54 years old, Cam An Nam commune, Cam Lam district, Khanh Hoa ) did not surrender to fate. He always strived to rise up, and together with his wife, raised 5 children to complete their education.

The spacious and airy house of Mr. Sinh's family, a paralyzed man, has many motorbikes, electric bicycles... mostly brought by students for him to repair.

Paralysis of the legs, not paralysis of the will

Mr. Sinh's legs were shriveled and cramped, but in contrast, his hands were nimble and never stopped. After disassembling and assembling, he measured the battery voltage and then repaired it immediately.

He said that when he was born, he was normal like any other child. But when he was 3 years old, after a fever, his legs became completely paralyzed.

Despite his disability, Mr. Sinh was eager to learn. He finished 9th grade, but dropped out after 10th grade because his house was too far from school and there were no wheelchairs at that time. He swallowed his tears in helplessness at the collapse of his dream of studying.

"Should I just keep dragging myself around the house? I was determined to learn a trade to make a living in the future. I couldn't become a loser," Mr. Sinh recalled.

He asked his parents to let him go to Nha Trang City to learn electronics repair. After a period of apprenticeship, in 1995, Mr. Sinh returned to his hometown and opened a small electronics and electrical repair shop at home.

At that time, the electrical and electronic profession was still quite new and busy in the countryside of Cam An Nam. As a paraplegic, climbing high to adjust the TV antenna (usually mounted on a 5-6m high bamboo tree to receive signals) for the people was a huge challenge for Mr. Sinh.

"At first, I had to use my arms to drag my whole body, especially my paralyzed legs, up the ladder. It was very cumbersome and difficult. Finally, I found a way to climb the ladder from behind, as if I were swinging on a horizontal bar..." - Mr. Sinh happily recounted a difficult but determined and creative time like that.

Admiring the disabled but strong-willed man, Ms. Cao Thi Phuong Thao fell in love with and became Mr. Sinh's good wife after many... hardships.

Mrs. Thao said that her eldest brother was paralyzed in one leg but still married a normal woman. Her brother-in-law is also disabled.

"But when I asked to marry Sinh, my family objected quite strongly. They loved their son and were worried that I would suffer, so they wanted to marry a healthy man. However, now we have proven that our love is true. Although Sinh is disabled, he is full of will to work, is creative, and takes care of his family even better than many other healthy men" - Mrs. Thao could not hide her pride.

"Study for your father, study as high as possible"

Mr. Sinh and Mrs. Thao have five children, four boys and one girl. All five of their children are studious and good students, and four of them have gone to college or university.

The eldest son Nguyen Cong Minh (born 1999) has shown his true character as a "locomotive" for his juniors. During his years studying electricity and electronics at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education, Minh always strived to be an excellent student to reduce the tuition burden for his parents. Minh graduated as valedictorian, with a degree in engineering with honors.

Following in his footsteps, his three younger siblings also entered universities and colleges in Ho Chi Minh City. The four brothers rented a room together to live, study, share and advise each other. Currently, at home with Mr. Sinh and his wife, only the youngest child, Nguyen Van Phuoc (born in 2007), is in 11th grade.

Nguyen Thi Thuy Tien (22 years old), the only daughter of Mr. Sinh and Mrs. Thao, has graduated and is working in the tourism industry in Ho Chi Minh City. Tien said that it is the enthusiasm for work and the will to overcome all challenges and difficulties of her disabled father and her hard-working mother that has inspired her five siblings to always be determined to study well and to study thoroughly.

"Although my father is physically handicapped, his love is immense. He said that in the past he longed to study but could not, now his children must study to help him, study as much and as high as possible. No matter how difficult it is, our parents still try their best to take care of the education of five children" - Tien shared.

"Everyone has a life, some are lucky, others are unfortunate. I just want to say that people in situations like mine should not be self-conscious but should be confident in overcoming their fate, then we can draw a beautiful and meaningful life for ourselves" - Mr. Sinh smiled gently.

"The smartest way to invest"

Physician Nguyen Xuan Long, a neighbor, confided: "Mr. Sinh has overcome his fate with extraordinary willpower, everyone admires him. In particular, he is a person who loves to learn and passes on that thirst for learning to his children as well as those who come into contact with him. He has devoted all his heart, all his strength, and all his finances to "invest" in his children's education to become successful. That is the smartest way to invest."
