As scheduled, on July 18, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will hold its first official discussion on artificial intelligence (AI) this week in New York, USA.

The discussion was chaired by British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly. Britain currently holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council and is seeking global leadership in regulating AI.

The UN's new move comes as governments around the world consider how to mitigate the risks of emerging AI technology, which could reshape the global economy and change the international security landscape.

In June, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres endorsed a proposal by several AI executives to create an international AI watchdog, similar to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The UN called for transparency about the risks of AI and the responsible use of data collected by AI.

The world has been facing an explosion of content created using generative AI technology since the launch of ChatGPT late last year. Many countries are looking to regulate chatbots and ensure the technology does not pose a danger to humanity.
