Henry warns Gyokeres

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry shares his views on Viktor Gyokeres, the Gunners' new £64m signing.

Gyokeres is expected to help Arsenal quench their thirst for titles.

Gyokeres arrived in north London with an impressive resume, scoring 97 goals and providing 28 assists in just two seasons in Portugal. However, Henry reminded that the Premier League is a completely different, much tougher environment than Liga Portugal.

"Titi" recalled that Gyokeres had played in England, but only made eight appearances in four seasons at Brighton before being sent out on loan. However, his time at Coventry City saw him demonstrate his impressive goalscoring ability.

“You can see this is a guy who has been through a difficult period and come through it,” said Henry. “He’s more confident, he’s looked after himself better, he’s changed physically and he’s become a killer in the box. The numbers don’t lie and Arsenal are a team that create a lot of chances, so it could be the perfect combination.”

Henry also called for patience: “The annoying thing now is that people want players to score goals straight away, but that doesn’t always happen. Let him perform before judging. I hope Gyokeres can help Arsenal win the title, but he can’t do it alone. The players around him have to play well too.”

Gyokeres has just made his mark when scoring to help Arsenal beat Athletic Bilbao 3-0 in the Emirates Cup. This is the first time since the 2021/22 season that Arsenal has had a top striker, after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette. Expectations are high, but as Henry said, success will only come if the whole Arsenal team steps up to the next level.
