The time to transfer beautiful sim numbers worth billions is over.

The market for beautiful sim numbers was 'hot' a few years ago with billion-dollar transactions. Now many sim numbers have been on sale for half a year, with prices dropping sharply but still no buyers.

Mr. Hoang in Ho Chi Minh City said that he has been selling the sim 0888889XXX for 650 million VND since the end of last year but it has not sold yet. Because he urgently needs money, he has reduced the price to 450 million VND but no one has bought it because they only pay about 300 million VND.

Similarly, in the past 5 months, Mr. Thang in Nam Dinh has been selling Viettel sim 0989XXX888 for 350 million VND but has not been able to close the deal. "I have been in the sim number business for 15 years and have never seen a period as difficult as this. Four years ago, beautiful sim numbers were advertised for sale and had buyers within 3-5 days, but now there are times when there is no transaction for a whole year," Mr. Thang said.

According to him, in the past, beautiful phone numbers were often sought after by real estate, construction, restaurant, and hotel tycoons. Now these people all refuse to make transactions, and even after he mobilized all his close connections, it was still not promising.

A survey by VnExpress at SIM card stores in Ho Chi Minh City also showed that SIM card sales are no longer as vibrant as before. Many stores have had no customers for a whole week, while others have had to close because their revenue is not enough to pay for the rent.

At the SIM card store on Pham Van Chieu Street (Go Vap), Mr. Thanh said that there used to be 2 service staff, but now they have been laid off because of business difficulties. "I haven't sold any SIM cards for a whole month, even the cheap ones. The store's current revenue is mostly from repairing phones and electronics," Mr. Thanh shared.

Commenting on this development, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Trung - who has 10 years of experience in the business of beautiful sim numbers in Ho Chi Minh City - said that when real estate is frozen, consumer purchasing power decreases, causing the buying and selling of sim numbers from popular to beautiful numbers to slow down. This year, very few customers in the real estate sector spend a large amount of money to buy a sim number worth hundreds of millions of dong. Even many sim number businesses sell at cost price but still have no customers.

"In 2019, I had many transactions of beautiful phone numbers worth up to billions of dong. After the pandemic, the transfer is only around 100-300 million dong," said Mr. Trung.

Sharing the same opinion, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tuan, who used to sell beautiful sim numbers in Nam Dinh, said that people who "hold" many beautiful sim numbers worth billions of dong are very worried. Because this market is almost stagnant, making it difficult for them to sell their goods.

The reason, according to Mr. Tuan, is that the "money" from real estate, construction, and retail giants is no longer spent on buying nice SIM cards. Along with that, the economy is going down, many people are also tightening their finances, causing all segments of the SIM card market to plummet.

In addition, according to Mr. Tuan, the network code conversion in recent years has had a significant impact on the market. The 10-digit beautiful sim numbers are not much different from landline phone numbers, so transactions in this group are increasingly gloomy.

For the market to recover, according to the business community, beautiful sim numbers need to return to their true value. Currently, the price of these types of sims on the market has only decreased by 20-30% in the context of economic difficulties, making it difficult for users to spend money to buy. Therefore, sim traders believe that when the price decreases by 50-60%, the market can start to move again.
