Ear piercing is a fairly popular form of beauty. In addition to the "traditional" position on the earlobe, young people today also have a preference for piercing their ears in many other positions on the ear rim to create a difference or to express their own personality. However, using non-sterile tools or improperly cleaned piercing areas, especially in cases where the piercing hole in the ear cartilage is infected, difficult to heal and has many serious complications.

Condition of the patient's right ear upon admission
The Central Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital regularly receives emergency cases of infection, abscesses, and even necrosis of the auricle due to piercing. The most recent case was the case of patient Phan Thi Khanh L, 18 years old (Thach That, Hanoi ) who was hospitalized with both ears swollen and painful with 4-5 piercing holes on each ear, the right ear was more swollen and painful, and had yellow pus. Doctors diagnosed the patient with bilateral auricular cartilage inflammation, right auricular cartilage abscess, and then performed incisions to drain the pus and clean the inflamed tissue.
In another case, patient Phi Dinh Manh T, 23 years old (Hoai Duc, Hanoi) was hospitalized with pain, swelling, redness and heat in the right earlobe, with a pus hole. Two weeks earlier, the patient had his right ear pierced. After about four days, Mr. T had a mild fever and pain in the right earlobe. The patient went to another medical facility for examination and treatment but did not improve, the swelling and pain remained and there was pus.
After being admitted to the hospital, the patient was diagnosed with a right auricular cartilage abscess due to an ear piercing. Doctors performed surgery to drain the abscess, scrape off the necrotic cartilage, and then suture and fix the patient with a gauze bandage soaked in antibiotic grease. Currently, Mr. T's right auricle is stable, there is no more pus, there is little tissue swelling, and the auricle on the injured side shows signs of slight shrinkage compared to the healthy side.

Patient with ear deformity due to ear piercing
Resident doctor Pham Anh Tuan - who directly treated the patient said: The most common complication after ear piercing is auricular cartilage inflammation. This is a dangerous complication for young people who like to pierce their ears because when piercing the cartilage layer of the ear, the ring is more likely to become infected and is more difficult to treat than infections in soft tissues such as the earlobe. In addition, the risk of contracting blood-borne diseases (hepatitis B, HIV, etc.) can also occur when the ear piercing tool is not handled properly.
Treatment of cartilage inflammation and auricular abscess is very complicated because bacteria causing cartilage inflammation must use antibiotics for a long time, and scraping of necrotic cartilage can easily leave sequelae. In some cases, if they do not go to the hospital in time, the auricular cartilage has been partially destroyed. After treatment, the inflammation completely improves but leaves serious sequelae such as deformed, wrinkled, and contracted auricles that require surgery to reconstruct the auricle.
Doctor Tuan recommends that when you need to have your ears pierced, you should choose a reputable medical facility licensed by a medical facility, and at the same time, you should learn carefully about how to care for and maintain hygiene after the procedure. You should consider when piercing your ears in many locations, especially the location where the piercing passes through the cartilage of the ear, because it can easily cause the risk of cartilage inflammation and complications due to cartilage inflammation. When there are unusual symptoms such as long-term swelling, pus at the piercing site, you should immediately go to a specialized medical facility for examination and timely treatment to avoid unfortunate consequences later.
