In the closed campus of Drug Rehabilitation Center No. 1 under the Drug Crime Investigation Police Department, Nghe An Provincial Police (Hai Loc Commune, Nghe An Province), the literacy class is still regularly lit. The students in the class, some in their early twenties, some with gray hair, but they share a big gap in their lives: "not having completed their schooling journey".

In front of the board and blank pages, their hands tremble, but each stroke becomes more steady under the dedicated guidance of the "special" teacher - they are police officers who are day and night responsible for managing and educating drug rehabilitation students.

Mr. Vi Van P. (53 years old, residing in Quy Hop commune, Nghe An province) has gray hair and entered the drug rehabilitation facility two years ago. Mr. P. is the eldest brother, and has five younger siblings. His family is poor and has many siblings, so he was not allowed to go to school since he was young. For decades, he was only used to manual labor, and was almost illiterate. From not being able to write his name or read complete sentences, the Thai ethnic man can now write his full name and read the rules and regulations at the facility. For him, that is an achievement he never dared to think of before. “The teachers at the facility encouraged me a lot, saying to be persistent, the rain will soak in the rain. Thanks to that, I had the courage to go to school. When I go out, I just hope to go to work, live a decent life, and teach my children and grandchildren not to make the same mistakes as me,” Mr. P. confided.

At 38 years old, Mr. Pham Van Q. (residing in Bach Ha commune, Nghe An province) is still single. For many years, he has lived off manual labor and the skills he learned from life. In the early days, Mr. Q. was bewildered by each letter and each stroke of the pen. The first time he wrote his name, he was as happy as a child. "When I finished writing, I couldn't stop laughing. Thank you so much to the staff and teachers who helped me learn to read and write," Mr. Q. said.

Captain Nguyen Thi Yen, an officer at Drug Rehabilitation Center No. 1, shared: “Teaching literacy to normal people is difficult, teaching students who have been involved in drug addiction is even more difficult. Partly because many people are old and afraid to learn, partly because they always feel inferior and self-conscious. Therefore, we not only teach literacy but also have to be close to and understand each person's psychology to promptly encourage them, help them overcome their inferiority complex and have more motivation to learn the lesson.”

In addition to the literacy class, at Drug Rehabilitation Center No. 1, Nghe An Provincial Police, there are also classes on politics, culture, national history, life skills to prevent relapse, law, vocational training, cultural activities, sports, psychological counseling, etc. These simple but meaningful lessons are contributing to arousing the will to rebuild the lives of people who have been caught up in the shadow of drugs. In the photo, Captain Nguyen Dinh Hai - Deputy Head of Drug Rehabilitation Center No. 1, teaches the lecture "The harmful effects of drugs and the law on drug prevention".

Lieutenant Colonel Tran Hong Quan, Head of Drug Rehabilitation Center No. 1, Nghe An Provincial Police, said that after taking over the task of state management of drug rehabilitation and post-rehabilitation management from the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Nghe An Province, Drug Rehabilitation Center No. 1 has built many new contents such as weekly flag salute, internal affairs regime, and legal propaganda so that students understand clearly that if they reuse drugs, they will be held criminally responsible. Along with that are cultural remedial classes and illiteracy eradication. This is a very humane policy of the Ministry of Public Security.

Currently, Drug Rehabilitation Center No. 1 has opened 3 classes in 3 sub-areas with 11 students, all of whom are male. Because the rehabilitation time of each person is different, the center has built a flexible curriculum, suitable for each student. The goal is to strive for any student, after completing the rehabilitation program and returning to the community, to be able to read and write, have basic knowledge of the law and life skills, and be ready to reintegrate into society confidently and proactively.

“Following the strong direction of the Director of Nghe An Provincial Police and the Party Committee, the leaders of the Drug Crime Investigation Police Department, Drug Rehabilitation Center No. 1 has launched the model of “Skilled Mass Mobilization” and is determined to build it into a model unit. In particular, the classes play an important role in raising political awareness, educating moral consciousness, healthy lifestyle, helping students better understand the value of culture and human personality. Thereby, forming a positive lifestyle, raising awareness of compliance with the regulations of the facility, preparing a good mindset to reintegrate into the community after completing the drug rehabilitation program”, Lieutenant Colonel Tran Hong Quan shared.
