Coach Mikel Arteta shared about his special relationship with striker Raheem Sterling when both were at Man.City. However, the Arsenal coach avoided discussing the possibility of "rescuing" the star who no longer has a place at Chelsea.
Chelsea - who signed Sterling from the Premier League champions for £50m two years ago - are now willing to listen to offers for the 29-year-old England winger. Crystal Palace are one of several Premier League clubs interested in Sterling, while there has also been talk of a return to Man City, or a move to Arsenal.
Recently, when asked about Sterling, Coach Arteta shared moderately, only emphasizing the working relationship at his old club Man.City - where he spent 3 years as assistant to Pep Guardiola, ending in 2019: “The time I worked with Raheem was special. We built a really strong relationship together. He was unbelievable at that time. Raheem also taught me a lot, about individuals, how players think, how we support them. He is someone I really have deep feelings for.”
Versatile Italian full-back Ricardo Calafiori is the most high-profile player to arrive at the Emirates this summer, while Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino is expected to be the next signing after Arsenal agreed a £33m deal in principle with Real Sociedad. And Arteta refused to say whether there would be any more transfer activity in the final week of the summer window: “Anything can happen, either way, and you have to be ready. Especially in the final week.”
Another concern is Arteta's own future. The 42-year-old's current contract at the Emirates expires next summer, and he has revealed that talks over a new deal will take place after the transfer window closes. "The focus is on the transfer window. We have quite a lot of work to do and discussions to do. We are working on it and we will address it at the right time," Arteta said.
Asked if negotiations would take place after the transfer window closes, Arteta replied: “Yes. First of all, I am grateful for where I am and the people I work with every day because it is really difficult to find harmony, trust, belief and unity of vision. That is something I always talk about because I believe we still have an incredible time ahead of us. It is exciting and I am excited about it.”
