Maresca confirmed that he has discussed with Chelsea's board the need to recruit a new centre-back. |
Speaking at a press conference on August 15, coach Maresca emphasized the importance of Colwill in Chelsea's playing style and expressed concern about finding a replacement from the current squad, in the context that "The Blues" will play the opening match of the Premier League against Crystal Palace on August 17.
Maresca confirmed: “I think we need a centre-back. We are looking internally, but the club knows my position. We will see what happens. When the transfer window is open, anything can happen.”
Colwill was a mainstay in Chelsea's defence last season, making 34 Premier League appearances and helping the club finish fourth. However, a recent anterior cruciate ligament injury in training means the England international could be out for the rest of the season, according to Sky Sports .
The loss of Colwill is a big blow to Maresca's build-up play from the back, which relies on the centre-back's ability to distribute the ball and his composure. In the opening match against Crystal Palace in the first round of the 2025/26 Premier League season, Maresca is expected to use the central defensive duo Tosin Adarabioyo and Trevoh Chalobah.
However, neither Adarabioyo nor Chalobah have reassured Maresca, who expressed his concerns: “You know how important Colwill was for us last season, in the way the club wants to play. We said many times that if we build from the back well, we can create chances and attack properly. Colwill was an important part of that, and now he is not available.”
