Coach Pep Guardiola: 'This season for Man City is considered a waste'

In the early morning of April 22, Man City won 2-1 against Aston Villa in the 34th round of the Premier League thanks to a late goal by Matheus Nunes in the 94th minute, after an accurate cross from Jeremy Doku. Three important points at the Etihad Stadium helped Pep Guardiola's team rise to third place, surpassing Nottingham Forest and Newcastle in the race for a place in next season's Champions League.

However, the gap of up to 18 points with the leading team Liverpool has made Man City's ambition to win the Premier League for the fifth consecutive time go up in smoke. After the match, coach Pep Guardiola frankly admitted:

"This season has been bad, whether we reach the FA Cup final or qualify for the Champions League. A successful season only comes from the Premier League - that's the real measure."

Despite not being satisfied with the entire season's journey, the Spanish coach still expressed excitement with this dramatic victory: "I'm really happy. I have to admit that. The last minutes were crazy, and this victory is extremely important."

Currently, Man City has 61 points after 34 matches and holds the right to decide in the race for the top 4. If they win all four remaining rounds, they will secure a place in the Champions League, marking the 15th consecutive season participating in Europe's most prestigious playground.

"The pressure on Man City is huge. The club needs to be in the Champions League. And if we win all four remaining matches, that will be the most positive highlight of this season," coach Guardiola emphasized.

The 2024/25 season is considered one of the most turbulent under Guardiola. Man City were eliminated from the Champions League early and lost their position in the Premier League right before the Christmas break.

However, the crucial win over Aston Villa not only keeps them in the race for the top four, but also gives them a boost ahead of this weekend's FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest. If they progress, City can still end the season with a consolation trophy.
