In a recent post on the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) homepage, Coach Troussier gave detailed assessments of Vietnamese football.
Coach Troussier believes the Vietnamese team cannot reach the Asian level.
The French strategist said that the Vietnamese team is currently ranked 95th in the world and 15th in Asia.
However, in reality, the "Golden Star Warriors" are only in the top 18 or 19 in Asia and share the number one position in Southeast Asia with Thailand.
“We still cannot reach the Asian level. The problem of the Vietnamese team is that we need a breakthrough to go beyond the regional level,” said coach Troussier.
Evaluating the performance in the third qualifying round of the 2022 World Cup, the former Japanese coach said that Vietnamese players have technique but still have many shortcomings.
When reviewing the matches at this stage, Mr. Troussier assessed: "The difference comes from the lack of experience, knowledge, support tools and tradition of playing in the tournament by Vietnamese players."
At the 2026 World Cup, FIFA decided to increase the number of participating teams to 48 and the Asian region also has 8.5 slots.
Therefore, the 68-year-old coach said he will aim to participate in the 2026 World Cup with the Vietnamese team.
“I like to set goals even though I don't know if they can be achieved, but we need a direction and that is to go to the 2026 World Cup.
I need time for the players to shed the old and then let them have my new philosophy, be it management, methods, adjustments or performances.
Strength does not come from individuals but from solidarity,” coach Troussier continued.
Under coach Troussier, the Vietnamese team is maintaining a perfect winning record after two friendly matches with Hong Kong (China) and Syria.
In the immediate future, the Vietnamese team will aim for the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup in November 2023 and the 2023 Asian Cup in Qatar in January 2024.
