- In recent years, people in Hoa Binh commune, Chi Lang district have converted some ineffective farming land to grow black canarium. The model has initially brought about efficiency, opening up economic development prospects for the people.

As a pioneer in growing black canarium trees, Mr. Nong Van Dai, Thong Nhat village, Hoa Binh commune, said: In 2018, my family invested in buying 100 black canarium trees from a nursery in Hai Phong to plant. At the same time, my family also planted new trees and expanded the area every year. Up to now, my family has about 1,000 black canarium trees, of which more than 200 trees have been harvested. In 2023, my family harvested over 2 tons of fruit, with the selling price at the garden from 70,000 to 80,000 VND/kg, bringing in revenue of over 140 million VND. It is expected that in September this year, the canarium trees will give a new harvest, with an estimated output of about 6 tons of fruit.
Similar to Mr. Dai's family, Mr. Vi Van Tinh's family in Lang Cang 1 village, Hoa Binh commune also developed a model of growing canarium. Mr. Tinh said: In 2019, when realizing that black canarium had high economic value, my family decided to invest in planting about 100 trees. In 2023, some canarium trees began to yield fruit. Although the first year the trees did not bear fruit evenly, my family harvested over 300 kilograms of fruit, bringing in an income of over 20 million VND.
Not only the above 2 households, many people in the commune have proactively invested in and developed the black canarium planting model. Accordingly, currently, the whole commune has over 10 hectares of black canarium, of which about 7 hectares have been harvested, with 20 households growing, mainly concentrated in the villages: Thong Nhat, Hoa Tam... This is also the commune with the largest black canarium planting area in Chi Lang district. In 2023, the commune's fresh canarium fruit output will reach about 20 tons, with a total value of over 1.4 billion VND. From growing black canarium, some households have had an income of 20 to 100 million VND/year.
In addition to the initiative of the people, every year, the commune government coordinates with related units to organize from 3 to 5 training courses on cultivation (including techniques for planting and caring for black canarium trees); propagate and guide people to choose quality seedlings. At the same time, the commune government assigns agricultural extension staff to regularly monitor and grasp the production situation of the people to promptly advise and guide people to prevent pests and diseases, limiting the impact on crop productivity and quality.
Mr. Vi Van Huy, Vice Chairman of Hoa Binh Commune People's Committee, said: Currently, the model of growing black canarium trees in the commune has initially brought economic efficiency to the people. To continue supporting people to develop the model, in the coming time, the commune government will step up propaganda work, encouraging people to convert ineffective farming land to grow black canarium trees. At the same time, the commune government will prioritize using capital from programs to support seeds and fertilizers for people; mobilize households growing black canarium trees to establish cooperatives to support each other to develop together, gradually improving productivity and fruit quality. At the same time, the commune People's Committee will proactively seek, connect, and create the most favorable conditions for businesses and cooperatives to come and purchase, aiming to link and consume products, creating stable output for people.
It can be seen that the black canarium planting model has initially brought practical economic efficiency to the people in Hoa Binh commune. With the orientation and support of the commune government and the initiative of each household, in the coming time, black canarium will likely become a key crop, contributing positively to the socio-economic development of Hoa Binh commune in particular and Chi Lang district in general.
