"Hoan Chau Ky: Thien Nam Liet Truyen" is a chapter novel about the Nguyen Canh family in Nghe An over the course of 600 years. The book not only tells the history of the Nguyen Canh family, but also provides valuable information about the culture and history of the country from the perspective of family heritage research.
The book "Hoan Chau Ky: Thien Nam Liet Truyen".
“Hoan Chau Ky: Thien Nam Liet Truyen” is one of the oldest chapter novels in our country, written about the history of the Nguyen Canh family - a large family that has lived for nearly 600 years in Nghe An and has many famous people, generals, cultural figures, and physicians in Vietnamese history such as: Lieu Quan Cong Nguyen Canh Que, Thu Quan Cong Nguyen Canh Kien, Thang Quan Cong Nguyen Canh Ha, Thai Pho Tan Quoc Cong Nguyen Canh Hoan...
The book consists of 4 chapters, 16 sections, each chapter has 4 sections, presented in prose form, interspersed with some parallel prose (letters, decrees, royal decrees, couplets) or verse (poems, praise) in many chapters and sections. In addition, the book also has an introduction by the Nguyen Canh Family Council of Vietnam, by Professor Tran Nghia and translator Nguyen Thi Thao. "Hoan Chau Ky: Thien Nam Liet Truyen" belongs to the group of books "Viewpoints of Vietnamese History" by Omega Plus, suitable for readers who love history and are interested in learning about families, especially the Nguyen Canh family of Vietnam.
According to tradition, every 10 years, the people and descendants of the Nguyen Canh family gather at the Temple of Tan Quoc Cong Nguyen Canh Hoan to organize and attend the "Decade of Laws" festival on a large scale, to praise andeducate about the glorious tradition of a "Loyalty, Diligence, Humanity, and Righteousness" family. At the end of 2023, once again, the Nguyen Canh family received another honor: The "Decade of Laws" festival at the Temple of Tan Quoc Cong Nguyen Canh Hoan of the family was recognized by the State as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. This year of Giap Thin - 2024 is also an important milestone, marking the 360-year history of the "Decade of Laws" festival.
In addition to the above heritage system, the ancestors of the family also left the country and their descendants a genealogy, which is classified as a national history of Vietnam. That is “Hoan Chau Ky: Thien Nam Liet Truyen”, a cultural heritage of the country. This genealogy was written by members of the Nguyen Canh family around the 17th century, and a handwritten copy of this document was donated by the Nguyen Canh family to the Institute of Han Nom Studies in 1983.
Writing about a family with many characters participating in the historical process of the country, contributing to the common history of an entire nation, therefore "Hoan Chau Ky: Thien Nam Liet Truyen" is considered a direct historical source, providing a lot of specific, rich information, valuable to supplement the content of official historical books written about the Le Trung Hung period (17th century) and deserves to be considered a milestone on the development path of the historical novel genre.
Researchers discuss the book.
Speaking about the book at a discussion organized by the National Archives Center I and Omega Books Plus, journalist Nguyen Phan Khiem said that the work has a special position in the history of prose, being a genealogy but also a literary work. He commented: "Although it is a private history, the book closely follows the historical developments of the country, even supplementing the official history. In terms of artistic language, the work combines scholarly and popular language, creating a complete difference from other chapter novels in our country during the same period."
Dr. Pham Van Tuan believes that the work “Hoan Chau Ky: Thien Nam Liet Truyen” shows the importance of researching genealogy or family heritage, because this book not only tells about the development process of a family, but also contributes to showing the great events of the nation, the events of the country in nearly 300 years - things that the great history cannot record completely.
From observations during his research, Dr. Pham Van Tuan concluded that, currently, historical research in our country still lacks many aspects, especially local history, while there is still a lot of potential in the research of private history, microhistory or family heritage besides genealogy such as royal decrees, steles, village regulations... These historical documents as well as family heritage are carefully researched not only to increase the understanding of each individual's origin, but personal history, family history are also vivid sources of information to supplement the gaps in national and ethnic history. And "Hoan Chau Ky: Thien Nam Liet Truyen" is one of those missing pieces.
