The mock exam for literature at Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City), according to the comments of a group of students of class 12A3 of this school, combines social and current topics, evoking feelings of pride. In particular, the Reading Comprehension section uses the poem "Where I was born - Hoang Sa" by author Nguyen Trong Van, talking about the attachment to the sea and islands, through the image of a child born in Hoang Sa. The questions require students to analyze poetic images and lyrical emotions that evoke national sovereignty and love for the homeland from a personal perspective.
Ignite a fire of desire to contribute, love and live beautifully
The social discussion section was led by an excerpt from the song "Continuing the story of peace " by musician Nguyen Van Chung, which raised the question: "What should young people do to continue writing the story of peace?". This was an open-ended question, encouraging students to express their personal opinions in conjunction with humanistic values and civic responsibilities.
Sharing with Thanh Nien reporters the reason for choosing the topic "Continuing the story of peace", teacher Do Duc Anh, who is in charge of compiling the high school graduation exam in literature at Bui Thi Xuan High School, said: "I believe that peace is not just a dry phrase appearing in textbooks or history lessons. It is the heartbeat of every Vietnamese person, the source that flows through many generations that have fallen and is also the burning hope in the hearts of every young person today".
"When I heard the lyrics of the song 'Continuing the story of peace', the melodies that came from the heart of a young musician, millions of young people on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the country's reunification day, I was really moved. And I suddenly thought: Is this the way today's young people are continuing the story of peace, not only through books, but also through music , through passion, through loving actions in everyday life?", said teacher Do Duc Anh.
Teacher Duc Anh shared: "This exam was born from that desire. I want students to not only remember history with gratitude, but also see their role in making the country better, so that peace is not just a memory, but something very vivid, very real, continued every day through the smallest efforts."
The teacher who compiled the literature exam questions said that he chose this topic because he believed in the young generation. "With love, with a desire to create, with faith in good values, you will know how to continue writing that story of peace with a warm heart and hands of action," said Mr. Duc Anh.
"Choosing this topic, I also want to send you a silent message: You are not just today's generation. You are the ones who continue the dreams of those who have gone before, you are the new pages in the long book called the Fatherland of Vietnam.
And I hope that after doing this test, even if it is just a few hundred words on the exam paper, in your hearts will be ignited a fire of desire to contribute, love and live beautifully, so that the story of peace will continue forever," said Mr. Duc Anh.
With this mock exam for literature, Mr. Huynh Thanh Phu, Principal of Bui Thi Xuan School, said that the teachers did not choose safe, repetitive types of questions, but dared to enter the area of "emotional education", where sincere emotions can sow the seeds of personality, ideals, and ethical behavior. When students sit in front of the mock exam for high school graduation and ask themselves: "Where does peace come from today?", "If there were no war, how should we live to preserve that peace?", that is when they are maturing in their thinking, learning to love their country not through slogans, but through the most practical and everyday actions.
This principal said, education is not just about teaching knowledge, but also about teaching people. And sometimes, sowing the seed of an ideal to live begins with a seemingly ordinary test.
Don't be "scared" of open questions.
It is known that the 2025 high school graduation exam taking place in June is the first exam to apply the 2018 General Education Program with many changes in the exam structure. In particular, the literature subject will not use materials in textbooks. The fact that schools organize mock exams is also a way for 12th grade students to get acquainted with the structure and format of the new exam.
Therefore, using lyrics as material is also a way for students to approach open-ended questions and new material. Therefore, Mr. Duc Anh gives advice: "Don't be afraid or worried. Consider it an opportunity to listen to a story, to live in emotions, and to express yourself.
First, read the text carefully, not only to understand the meaning, but also to feel the spirit and message hidden in each word. The topic is the "key", but the text is the "door" that leads to your thinking.
When writing, don't focus too much on "rehearsing" or "fitting in", write from your heart, from your own experiences. Let your writing not just be words on paper, but the voice of a young person living in this era, grateful for the past, loving the present, and eager to build the future.
And finally, remember: A good essay is not about the most polished sentences, but about the most sincere emotions. Let your heart speak on the page."
