Khong Lao Commune Farmers' Association: Promoting the core role in economic development

The Farmers' Association of Khong Lao Commune has 33 branches with 3,074 members. In recent times, the Association has focused on implementing emulation movements for good production and business, supporting members in accessing technical advances, creating a leap forward in agricultural development. The Association actively propagates and mobilizes farmers to switch from small-scale farming to concentrated, bio-safe farming; focusing on preserving and developing livestock breeds with high economic value. Models of raising fattened buffaloes and cows and applying biological bedding in livestock farming have been widely replicated. Thanks to that, the livestock herd has developed stably in both quantity and quality, the average annual livestock growth rate has reached over 5.5%, the whole commune currently has over 41,500 cattle.

The Association also encourages members to expand the production scale of some local endemic crops to form commodity production areas such as Khau Luong Phung sticky rice and Phong Tho rice. Build and replicate agricultural extension models to transfer scientific and technical advances to people such as: Testing some new varieties, forming value chains associated with the consumption of products such as: sugarcane, high-quality pure rice, tea, mango, taro...

In recent years, the economic structure in the commune has shifted in a positive direction. Productivity and rice output have increased over the years, with an average food intake per capita of 382 kg/year. In the commune, a number of OCOP products have been formed: Phong Tho honey, Hoang Then ancient Shan Tuyet green tea, crispy dried bananas, soft dried bananas, Phong Tho honey dried bananas. Mr. Ly Phu Quang, Then Thau village (Khong Lao commune) shared: "With guidance and knowledge support from the commune's Farmers' Association officials, my family chose to develop the economy according to the VAC model. I focused on growing 500m2 of galangal, 1,000m2 of taro, over 1ha of cassava, over 1ha of cardamom, and digging a pond to raise fish with a water surface area of over 300m2. In addition, my family also raises livestock and poultry... On average, each year after deducting expenses, my family earns nearly 200 million VND in profit."

Many farmer members of Khong Lao commune choose to develop their economy from rubber trees.

In addition, the Commune Farmers' Association has supported members to access preferential loan programs to invest in agricultural machinery. Up to now, 90% of households in the commune have plows and harrows, 62% of households have mini threshers to help reduce labor, increase productivity and labor efficiency. The number of farmer members registering and achieving the title of good production and business at all levels is constantly increasing. In the period of 2023-2025, the commune has 502 good production and business households at all levels.

Implementing the program of building new rural areas, the Association has mobilized members to actively participate and respond; in particular, the Association has mobilized members and farmers to donate over 3,570 square meters of land, contributing over 2,180 working days to build traffic works within the village and within the fields. Mobilizing people to regularly participate in cleaning village roads and alleys, joining hands to protect the environment, gradually eliminating backward customs to build cultural life in residential areas... Thanks to that, up to now, Khong Lao commune has achieved 12/19 criteria in the program of building new rural areas.
