Over 1,500 billion VND to support offshore fishing vessels

In October 2017, the Provincial People's Committee established a Steering Committee to implement policies to encourage and support exploitation, aquaculture and seafood exploitation services in offshore areas according to Decision 48/2010/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister and policies on fisheries development according to Decree 67/2014/ND-CP of the Government.

From 2010 to 2022, the Provincial People's Committee has approved 1,056 fishing vessels to regularly operate in distant waters, supporting fishermen with an amount of VND 1,547.3 billion. In the period of 2018 - 2022 alone, it is VND 989.5 billion, of which, supporting fuel costs for round trips of 6,161 fishing vessels/12,680 fishing trips/VND 953.39 billion; supporting costs for purchasing hull insurance and crew accident insurance for 2,797 fishing vessels participating in activities in distant waters with a total support cost of VND 24.52 billion; supporting costs for purchasing crew accident insurance for 19,721 crew members with a total cost of VND 4.85 billion; support funding to purchase 240 long-range HF communication devices with integrated satellite positioning equipment (GPS) installed on fishing boats for fishermen with a total support budget of 6.72 billion VND and 1 shore station located at the Department of Fisheries with an amount of 0.26 billion VND. In the first phase of 2023, the total number of approved applications was 1,487 applications/total support amount was 103.89 billion VND, of which, support for fuel costs for round trips was 1,240 applications/102.34 billion VND; support for costs to buy crew accident insurance was 247 applications/1.5 billion VND.

Many fishing vessels regularly operating in distant waters are supported under Decision 48.

The implementation of the policy to support fishermen operating in offshore areas according to Decision No. 48 of the Prime Minister has achieved many practical results. Thereby, it has encouraged and motivated fishermen to boldly go to offshore areas to exploit seafood and seafood exploitation services, increase income, contribute to the socio-economic development of the locality; improve the technical level, experience and skills of fishermen in offshore fishing. At the same time, it has promoted fishermen to develop large-capacity fishing vessels, in line with the State's policy on the development of the seafood exploitation industry, reduce the pressure on coastal exploitation, increase the presence of fishing vessels and fishermen in offshore areas. Thereby, limiting the situation of fishing vessels violating foreign waters to illegally exploit, promptly detecting and providing information to competent agencies about the situation of foreign fishing vessels violating our country's waters, making an important contribution to affirming and protecting the sovereignty of the sea and islands of the Fatherland.
