Mr. Ho Tan Minh, Chief of Office of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, said that in the graduation exam on the morning of June 27 at the Ho Chi Minh City exam cluster, there was a special case.
Candidate LQ, a student of Han Thuyen High School, was arranged to take the graduation exam at Phu Nhuan High School. Q. lives in Binh Chanh District, and on the way to Phu Nhuan High School, his car broke down. Q. was supported by the Examination Steering Committee to go to Vinh Loc High School (Binh Tan) to take the exam. At this exam location, Q. took the exam in a backup room.
Thus, the candidate did not miss the graduation exam. The incident demonstrated the humane, reasonable and appropriate handling of the HCMC examination cluster.
This year, Ho Chi Minh City has 97,940 candidates registered for the high school graduation exam. Of these, more than 49,300 students chose to take the Foreign Language exam (mainly English), accounting for 50.37%. The next two most chosen subjects are Physics and Chemistry, accounting for 44.1% and 28.38%, respectively. Next are Geography and History, accounting for approximately 25%.

The choice of subjects by students in Ho Chi Minh City goes against the national trend. According to statistics, more than 1.1 million students nationwide took the high school graduation exam. Of these, History and Geography were the two most chosen subjects with nearly 500,000 students registering. Only more than 358,000 students chose English, accounting for more than 32%. More than 354,000 students registered for Physics, accounting for about 30%. Only more than 246,000 students chose Chemistry.
Previously in 2024, nearly 61% of candidates chose the Natural Science exam, while the average score of these subjects was low, which led to Ho Chi Minh City falling 9 places in graduation exam scores (ranked 20th). Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu, Director of the Department of Education and Training, explained that this was obvious, because Ho Chi Minh City has long been innovating teaching methods, testing and evaluating students in the direction of developing students' qualities and abilities (theeducational innovation orientation of the 2018 General Education Program).
Meanwhile, the high school graduation exam follows the old program (General Education Program 2006) and is for students nationwide. Therefore, not only this year but for many years, Ho Chi Minh City has not been the locality with the highest graduation exam results. However, Ho Chi Minh City is still steadfast in its innovation.
According to Mr. Hieu, another reason is that students in Ho Chi Minh City participate in the graduation exam with a focus. That is, students focus on subjects used for university admission. Therefore, if calculated by university admission groups, the exam scores of students in Ho Chi Minh City are very high. Specifically, the high school graduation exam scores of students in Ho Chi Minh City ranked first in the country in groups A, A1, B, C. In group D alone, students in Ho Chi Minh City ranked 8th in the country.
In addition, 60.85% of students in Ho Chi Minh City chose the Natural Science group (Physics, Chemistry, Biology), much higher than the national average (37%). The scores of these subjects were similar or decreased compared to last year, while the scores of Social Sciences (History, Geography, Civic Education) increased. Therefore, the overall results fell behind those of localities with a high percentage of students choosing the Social Sciences exam.
