Chinese technology company Huawei will officially release its new operating system, HarmonyOS Next, at the end of September, and it will no longer support Android applications.
Huawei's HarmonyOS Next operating system will compete with Google's Android and Apple's iOS in the Chinese smartphone market. According to Chen Xinxin, head of HarmonyOS industrial solutions, Huawei will officially release the new operating system at the end of September. This information was announced at an international trade fair in Beijing on September 14th.

HarmonyOS Next is considered a completely "pure" version of Harmony. Unlike previous versions, it no longer supports Android applications. According to Mr. Chen, this new operating system is "completely autonomous and independently developed."
Huawei first announced HarmonyOS as an alternative to Android in the Chinese market in August 2019, three months after being added to the US trade sanctions list, preventing the company from purchasing US-made technology without a license.
Mr. Chen stated that, to date, HarmonyOS has run on over 900 million devices with 2.54 million developers. Huawei plans to invest more than 7 billion RMB (approximately $987 million) to encourage native applications and technical services for HarmonyOS, as well as build an ecosystem for the operating system.
In January 2024, Huawei also introduced HarmonyOS Next to developers. Huawei's consumer business president, Richard Yu Chengdong, revealed that the new operating system would officially be available on the Mate 70 – the next 5G smartphone series – in the fourth quarter.
More and more Chinese developers are showing support for HarmonyOS Next. For example, e-commerce giant JD.com revealed earlier this week that a mobile app supporting HarmonyOS Next will be released this September.
Recently, HarmonyOS surpassed Apple iOS to become the second-largest mobile operating system in China with a 17% market share in the first three months of the year, doubling its presence compared to the same period last year, according to research firm Counterpoint.
