Mobilizing forces to help farmers minimize damage to spring rice

Due to the impact of the rains on the night of May 24 and the morning of May 25, the whole province experienced very heavy rain, with nearly 400mm of rain in Ky Anh district alone, causing flooding in many localities in the district, damaging many areas of crops and rice that were about to be harvested.

In Ky Phong commune, the rainfall measured 380mm, causing flooding of 115ha of rice. Due to heavy rain, a large amount of water hyacinth from the rivers in the area was pushed to cover nearly 50ha of rice of people in the villages: Trung Phong, Thuong Phong and Ha Phong.

Taking advantage of the high water level, local authorities mobilized mass organizations and villagers to push water fern out of the fields to save the rice.

Chairman of Ky Phong Commune People's Committee Vo Tien Suu said: "Because the amount of water fern floating in is so large that it covers all the rice fields, we have mobilized all our forces and people have prepared tools to push the water fern out of the fields. After that, we will hire a machine to scoop the water fern out of the water to prevent the water fern from continuing to drift into the rice fields when there is heavy rain and the river water rises."

In Cam Xuyen district, heavy rains also caused great damage to the people. The district quickly mobilized more than 100 officers and soldiers of Regiment 841, the District Military Command, along with militia forces in the communes to support people in unloading and transporting wet rice to high places and drying it.

The highest goal at this time is to minimize damage, help people salvage the fruits of their labor and quickly stabilize their lives after natural disasters.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan (My Phu village, Cam My commune) could not hide her emotion: "My family had nearly 2 tons of rice that had just been harvested when the flood came. The yard was flooded, the rice was soaked, I was worried about losing the whole crop. Luckily, the soldiers and local authorities came to help dry the rice, my family was much less worried."

It is known that the rain and floods from yesterday afternoon to the early morning of May 25 caused more than 1,800 tons of spring rice harvested by Cam Xuyen farmers to be completely soaked with water. This is not only a loss in output but also a concern for people about the risk of losing the entire crop.

We are putting all our efforts and working closely with other units to support people in drying and consuming rice, minimizing damage. The district is also looking for long-term solutions to help people be more proactive in the face of complicated weather developments.
