Cho Gao District: Pay attention to doing a good job of caring for the elderly

(ABO) In recent times, the work of caring for the elderly in Cho Gao district, Tien Giang province has always received special attention from local authorities at all levels, especially in terms of spirit, material and health. Notably, the Association of the Elderly at all levels has carried out practical activities to care for the elderly, contributing to the successful implementation of the movement "The older the age, the higher the ambition, setting a good example for the cause of protecting and building the Fatherland".

Cho Gao District has a population of over 191 thousand people, including 20,786 elderly people, accounting for 10.88% of the population. The total number of members of the Association to date is 19,223, reaching 92.48%, of which the number of members under 60 years old is 491 people, accounting for 2.55% of the members.

Over the past years, the District Elderly Association has coordinated with agencies, departments, branches, unions of the district, communes and towns to implement the contents of the emulation movement launched by the Central Association and localities such as: Promoting the study and following of Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morality and lifestyle; setting good examples, promoting the role of the elderly, building new rural areas; competing in economic development, contributing to poverty reduction and legitimate enrichment.

In emulation movements, the District Elderly Association regularly does a good job of gathering and uniting members to compete in economic and social development, building cultural life in residential areas, maintaining political security and social order and safety in the district.

Regarding the care of the elderly, the Association of the Elderly of the district and communes and towns has performed well the role of advising the Party Committee and the government on policies for the elderly; monitoring and making a list of the elderly from 80 years old who have not yet received social insurance, the poor, lonely and disadvantaged elderly to receive monthly social allowances according to regulations.

The Association at all levels closely coordinates with functional sectors to urge and supervise the implementation of policies for the elderly, supervise welfare construction projects at the grassroots level..., ensuring that 100% of the elderly receive subsidies and are granted health insurance cards.

At the same time, mobilize businesses and philanthropists (including the elderly) to support and contribute resources to care for the poor, elderly, lonely and homeless elderly, contribute to the Care Fund and promote the role of the elderly in addition to the contributions of members.

Every year, activities to visit and encourage the elderly in difficult circumstances in the district are carefully carried out by the Association at all levels, specifically implementing the program "Bright eyes for the elderly" and mobilizing Tet gifts for poor elderly people.

Along with that, the Association at all levels organizes visits to sick elderly people, condolences to deceased elderly people; medical examinations, treatment, and free medicine for the elderly; provides capital for elderly people with economic difficulties to develop their economy, and provides emergency assistance...

Elderly health care

Specifically, over the past 5 years, the Association at all levels has coordinated with agencies, departments, branches and organizations to eliminate temporary houses for the elderly, build 14 houses of gratitude, solidarity and charity with a total construction cost of 715 million VND; repair 2 houses with a cost of 80 million VND, of which 1 house was contributed by elderly members, each member 5,000 VND/year.

During the Lunar New Year, the Association mobilized support for poor and near-poor elderly people, policy households, and those in difficulty with nearly 10,000 gifts, worth over 2.7 billion VND; provided emergency assistance and assistance to 8,937 elderly people with an amount of 2.5 billion VND.

The Association at all levels coordinated with the health sector to examine, treat and provide free medicine to 46,408 elderly people with a total amount of 2.6 billion VND. 4,065 elderly people were examined and consulted about eye diseases, 2,254 elderly people were treated for eye diseases, of which 607 elderly people had cataract surgery.

The grassroots Elderly Association cares about the spiritual life of the elderly such as cultural, artistic, physical education, sports, and tourism activities for the elderly.

The district currently has 21 clubs such as Southern folk music, Physical education, Grandparents and Grandchildren, Ornamental plants, Poetry, Volleyball... with 322 members participating, contributing to preserving and promoting the cultural identity of the nation and improving the health of the elderly.

Chairman of the Elderly Association of Cho Gao District, Ngo Huu Nguyen, said that a prominent activity of the Elderly Association in recent times is that all levels of the Association have promoted longevity celebrations for the elderly aged 70 and over 100 years old. Specifically, on the occasion of the 84th anniversary of the Traditional Day of the Elderly on June 6 this year, the entire Cho Gao district had 3,871 elderly people celebrated their longevity. This is a beautiful cultural feature, imbued with humanity, showing filial piety as well as the morality of "respecting the elderly, the elderly leave the old to us". In a joyful and warm atmosphere, the Party Committee and local authorities of Cho Gao District paid attention to carefully organizing longevity celebrations for the elderly. Thereby educating the younger generation about the tradition of "Respect the elderly, achieve longevity" and "When drinking water, remember its source".

Along with that, activities to promote the role of the elderly are of interest to the District Association and the grassroots Association. Currently, 100% of the grassroots Associations have established a Fund for the Care and Promotion of the Role of the Elderly; and established 55 Intergenerational Self-Help Clubs.

From the Intergenerational Self-Help Clubs, the lives of the elderly members have changed a lot, they are more optimistic and happier; members can exchange and learn production and business experiences, participate in beneficial activities for themselves to live happily, healthily and usefully for society.

Through this, it enhances the responsibility of all levels, sectors and the whole society in caring for, creating conditions and encouraging the elderly to live happily, healthily, usefully and continue to contribute to the economic and social development of the locality.
