Tam Duong District: Cassava growing model for high income

Việt NamViệt Nam16/03/2024

(BLC) - Thanks to the correct orientation of the Party Committee and the government of Ban Bo commune (Tam Duong district), the joint venture and association with Hong Phat Cooperative (Ban Bo commune) in converting the area of single-crop rice land to cassava cultivation initially brought high economic efficiency. Although it has only been put into trial cultivation in Hua Sang village for nearly a year, the model has brought a large source of income for the people and the cooperative.

Realizing that Ban Bo commune has favorable traffic conditions, climate and soil suitable for developing cassava, Hong Phat Cooperative (HTX) chose Hua Sang village to conduct a trial planting. In March 2023, with the consent of Tam Duong District People's Committee, the facilitation of Ban Bo commune's local Party Committee and government, and the consensus of the people, Hong Phat Cooperative rented 10 hectares of one-crop rice fields from Hua Sang villagers to grow 4,000 cassava roots. Each year, the Cooperative pays the people 5,500 kg of rice/ha.

Leaders of Tam Duong province and district visited the cassava growing model of Hong Phat Cooperative in Hua Sang village (Ban Bo commune).

After the agreement was reached, the cooperative proceeded to carry out land preparation and seeding to ensure progress. The cooperative used an excavator to build 400 mounds of soil/ha, with each mound of soil about 5-6m3 of soil; the basal fertilizer before planting included 3kg of Dau Trau fertilizer and 1kg of Lam Thao NPK phosphate, and also made a trellis. After preparation, the cooperative imported seedlings from Hai Duong province to transport for planting. The process of caring for cassava is quite simple and easy to implement, including: weeding, watering, pruning, and fertilizing 3 times from planting to harvesting. Regarding pest control, the main focus is on preventing mealybugs and rust worms. After a year of planting and caring for cassava, the enterprise harvested in February 2024, with an average yield of 75kg of tubers/root, and an average output of 30 tons/ha. The current price of fresh cassava root ranges from 13,000 - 15,000 VND/kg, giving a total income of 400 million VND/ha.

Mr. Lo Van Phan's family in Hua Sang village has over 4,000m2 of agricultural land. He only cultivates one crop, the other one does not have enough water for irrigation so the land is left fallow, which is a waste. He leased the land to Hong Phat Cooperative to grow cassava. Along with that, his family and 3 workers take care of the cassava plants. Last year, his family had an additional income of nearly 100 million VND, thanks to which Mr. Phan's family's life has been developing day by day.

The model of growing cassava on the single-crop rice land of Hong Phat Cooperative has been evaluated by Ban Bo Commune, Tam Duong District as being relatively effective. The locality has organized many delegations to visit and study in order to replicate the model in the future.

Employees of Hong Phat Cooperative and people of Hua Sang village are happy because cassava has a good harvest and good price.

Along with that, Ban Bo commune will accompany and create conditions for the cooperative to build cassava starch products that meet OCOP standards. In addition, the cooperative plans to invest in building a cassava starch processing factory and produce some cassava starch products such as vermicelli, confectionery, ice cream... under the brand name of Lai Chau products.

The initial success of the cassava growing model of Hong Phat Cooperative has opened up a new direction for crop development for local people. With the initial results achieved in 2023, in 2024, the Cooperative will continue to maintain the planted area and mobilize people in neighboring villages to expand the area to ensure care and management. At the same time, the Cooperative will expand its links with households in the commune with large land funds as well as households with small, fragmented land areas to grow and develop cassava in Ban Bo commune in the form of: the Cooperative supports people with 50% of the cost of building mounds; advances seeds; supports and guides the process, techniques of planting and caring, and pest control; and consumes products for people at market prices at each time.
