Indonesia: Announces End of COVID-19 Pandemic

Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) officially announced the end of the COVID-19 pandemic in the archipelago nation and Indonesia began to enter the phase of considering COVID-19 as an endemic disease.

Speaking at a press conference on June 21 at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, President Jokowi announced: "After more than 3 years of fighting together against the COVID-19 pandemic, from today (June 21), the Indonesian Government has decided to cancel the pandemic status and we enter the phase of considering COVID-19 as an endemic disease."

President Jokowi said the government made the decision based on the number of new daily COVID-19 cases being close to zero.

The results of a recent serological survey also showed that 99% of Indonesians have COVID-19 antibodies.

However, President Jokowi called on people to be cautious and continue to practice a healthy lifestyle and protect their health. The President of this Southeast Asian country also emphasized that with this decision, the national economy will change for the better and improve faster.

In late December 2022, Indonesian President Joko Widodo announced that the country had completely lifted COVID-19 prevention measures because the majority of the population had antibodies to the disease.

According to the Indonesian Ministry of Health , the country has recorded more than 6.7 million COVID-19 cases, including 160,583 deaths. Nearly 75% of Indonesians over the age of 6, or 174.7 million people, have received two doses of COVID-19 vaccine and 68.5 million people have received at least one booster dose./.
