Ms. Do Thi Thanh Thuy (Hoa Phuoc commune, Hoa Vang district) has built an organic guava growing model on an area of 5,000m² for over 3 years. Her garden has about 600 guava trees. Taking advantage of the fertile soil conditions, Ms. Thuy grows guava trees in a completely natural way. In particular, the care process is carried out with a strict process, using only manure and homemade organic fertilizers to provide nutrients for the trees.

“I focus on the quality and safety of the products, because this is the key to building trust with customers. I grow them in a layered way, with each batch of guava about 2-3 months apart, so that the whole garden bears fruit continuously. The main care is to clear the grass so that the trees can grow well. Currently, the selling price of guava ranges from 30,000 to 40,000 VND/kg, with an average harvest of about 500kg of guava per month,” Ms. Thuy shared.

Not only stopping at selling fresh guava, Ms. Thuy also develops a variety of products from guava trees such as guava leaf tea and guava wine. Currently, guava leaf tea costs 75,000 VND/box, guava wine costs 129,000 VND/500 ml bottle. The product "Thanh Thuy Guava Leaf Tea" has a 3-star OCOP certification. All products have a stable consumption market in Da Nang , Quang Nam and the provinces in the Central region. Besides traditional methods, she promotes product consumption through e-commerce platforms and platforms such as Facebook, Zalo... with a stable source of customers.

“Up to now, my products have been positively received by the market. The important factors are the product quality and organic farming methods that have helped the products become popular. In the coming time, I will continue to optimize packaging and labels, and at the same time build a growing area linked to households in the commune to stabilize the source of raw materials needed for production,” Ms. Thuy informed.

For many years in Hoa Ninh commune (Hoa Vang district), local households have converted ineffective agricultural land to organic grapefruit cultivation, bringing high economic value. To date, Hoa Ninh green-skin grapefruit has achieved a 4-star OCOP product certification. The grapefruit has large, round fruit, thin skin, sweet taste, thick segments, and is considered a specialty, used as gifts for relatives.

Mr. Ngo Dung (Trung Nghia village, Hoa Ninh commune) is planting 320 grapefruit trees with a total area of 1.5 hectares. He recalled that he used to plant acacia trees on this land but the economic efficiency was low due to poor soil, the planting period was only 4 years to harvest once. Since 2021, when he switched to growing grapefruit, the economic efficiency has been 5-6 times higher than growing acacia. Mr. Dung said that the Hoa Ninh land at the foot of Ba Na mountain has a climate, soil and land that are very suitable for green-skin grapefruit.

According to the Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Hoa Ninh Commune, Nguyen Van Thanh, the model of growing green-skinned grapefruit in Hoa Ninh was established in 2017, and to date, nearly 90 households have participated with an area of 40 hectares. With the advantage of hill gardens, grapefruit trees have become the "livelihood" of people in the commune. Green-skinned grapefruit trees are not unfamiliar to farmers here. However, to develop in an organic direction, creating clean, quality agricultural products, it will bring high economic efficiency. Along with expanding the production area, farmers have gradually perfected the process of planting and caring for grapefruit varieties using organic methods. The grapefruit breeding process is also strictly implemented, on the basis of standard varieties that produce high fruit rates, are less susceptible to pests and diseases, and develop well.

“Some grapefruit garden owners have invested in transportation systems, lighting for travel to serve production and orienting the development of tourism and picnics. The price of green-skinned grapefruit fluctuates between 50,000-60,000 VND/kg, each tree yields 150kg/year, helping farmers have a stable income. The market demand for Hoa Ninh green-skinned grapefruit is quite large, which is an opportunity for us to confidently develop the local grapefruit brand. In the coming time, we will continue to encourage people to grow grapefruit according to VietGAP standards and request that all levels and sectors support seedlings, irrigation systems, organic fertilizers…”, Mr. Thanh said.
