Optimizing supply chain for business
Hai Phong City is known as a locality with a modern seaport system, especially Lach Huyen Port - the first deep-water port in the North, along with Cat Bi International Airport and a convenient transportation network connecting with provinces and cities in the region. This locality also has many industrial parks (IPs) and economic zones (EZs) that have been planned and developed synchronously, attracting many multinational corporations to invest. As of early May 2025, there are 18 IPs and EZs established and put into operation in Hai Phong City, in addition to the system of industrial clusters (ICs). The IPs and EZs are all conveniently located, directly connected to the seaport area in Hai Phong.
As the largest seaport in the North, Hai Phong seaport is operating 14 shipping routes, including 6 trans -Pacific routes to the Americas, 1 route to Australia, 2 routes to India and other intra-Asian service routes. Thus, building a seaport industrial ecosystem linking industrial parks and economic zones to complement each other helps create a stable source of goods. Most businesses operating in industrial parks and economic zones have a need to use seaport services to shorten time and save on transportation costs.
According to Mr. Benoit de Quillacq - Managing Director of MSC shipping company in Vietnam, MSC cooperated with Hai Phong Port Joint Stock Company to establish a joint venture to exploit berths 3 and 4 in Lach Huyen. The reason the group chose Hai Phong City and Hai Phong Port is not only because of its strategic geographical location - the gateway to trade in Northern Vietnam, but also because of its strong development potential and the commitment of the local government.
In fact, Hai Phong City has always affirmed its position as an important traffic hub, a gateway to the sea of the Northern region, contributing positively to the socio-economic development of the whole country. The coordination between industrial parks, economic zones and seaport exploitation enterprises has created a lever to promote the economic development of Hai Phong City.
This is clearly shown through the cargo throughput of Hai Phong seaport area. In the period 2020-2024, the average cargo growth rate reached 5.8%, of which container cargo increased by 7.2%, general and bulk cargo increased by 0.7%, and liquid/gas cargo increased by 8.9%. In 2024 alone, the output through Hai Phong Port reached 106.5 million tons, of which containers alone reached 78.2 million tons (7.2 million TEU).
Mr. Takashi Kagamoto - General Director of Mitsubishi Estate Vietnam Company shared that with the advantage of geographical location and preferential policies from the Government, FDI investment in Hai Phong has grown strongly in recent times. In Hai Phong, Mitsubishi Estate has chosen Nam Dinh Vu Industrial Park of Sao Do Group - this is an industrial park with good infrastructure connections, good electricity facilities, other fields and close to Hai Phong Port. Along with the continuous expansion of Sao Do Group, it is expected to attract new manufacturing industries, leading to increased demand for logistics in the area surrounding the project.
Continue to expand industrial parks and economic zones near seaports
In fact, Hai Phong City is a major economic center of the North with many strongly developing industrial parks and economic zones. The presence of Hai Phong seaport plays an important role in promoting regional economic development, attracting investment and creating favorable conditions for production and business activities. Hai Phong City aims to have cargo throughput through Hai Phong seaport reach 175.4 to 215.5 million tons by 2030. Of which, container cargo output is from 12.1 million TEU to 14.92 million TEU, not including international transit container cargo. To achieve this goal, strong and drastic investment in the system connecting industrial parks and economic zones with seaports plays a particularly important role.
Currently, in addition to existing industrial parks and economic zones, Hai Phong City continues to promote the establishment of a series of new industrial parks and economic zones, aiming to build a green - smart - synchronous industrial ecosystem, towards completing the industrialization and modernization process and becoming an industrial city developing in a modern direction.
This locality is also urgently carrying out the tasks of building and developing the coastal economic zone in the south of Hai Phong. Specifically, at the first working session of the Steering Committee for the development of the coastal economic zone in the south of Hai Phong, the Hai Phong Economic Zone Management Board informed that 7 industrial zones (including Tran Duong; Tien Lang 1 and 2; Tan Trao; Ngu Phuc; Tran Duong-Hoa Binh) in the coastal economic zone in the south of Hai Phong have had investors researching. Notably, there are investors researching the construction of a port complex, a gas-fired power plant, a shipyard, an industrial park, a logistics center with a total investment of tens of billions of USD... These are positive signals, showing the interest of investors in the coastal economic zone in the south of Hai Phong in particular, and the industrial zones and economic zones in the city in general.
Along with the development of industrial parks and economic zones, Hai Phong City also focuses on investing in transport infrastructure connecting industrial parks and economic zones with seaport areas, especially the deep-water port cluster in Lach Huyen. Projects such as: upgrading and expanding provincial road 356, Tan Vu - Lach Huyen 1, 2 bridges, Bui Vien - Nguyen Truong To road after ports 3 to 6 (Lach Huyen port area), Lao Cai - Hanoi - Hai Phong railway... create a synchronous transport system, reduce transportation costs, and improve competitiveness.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tung - Chairman of Hai Phong City People's Committee said that in order to continue sustainable growth in 2025, Hai Phong City will continue to submit for approval or approve adjustments to important city plans in 2025 such as: General planning for construction of Dinh Vu - Cat Hai Economic Zone, the task of general planning of the Southern coastal economic zone. At the same time, invest in a number of traffic infrastructure and technical infrastructure projects in the new economic zone. Closely coordinate with the Ministry of Construction to complete procedures, strive to start construction of the Lao Cai - Hanoi - Hai Phong railway line by the end of 2025.
