The 2019-2024 period marks a major step forward in digital statistical cooperation between Indonesia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries.
This cooperation, according to Indonesia's ResearchGate organization, not only promotes digital economic growth for the region, but is also an important foundation for ASEAN to make data-driven decisions, promote regional data integration and realize sustainable development goals.
Digital transformation in Southeast Asia, especially in Indonesia, has been rapid over the past five years. ASEAN is forecast to become the world’s fourth largest economy by 2030. In this context, the digital economy is considered a key growth driver for the region. Studies estimate that ASEAN’s digital economic potential could increase by US$1 trillion over the next decade.
To tap into this potential, strategic frameworks have been established including the ASEAN Digital Masterplan 2025 and the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA) - with the expectation of raising the value of ASEAN's digital economy to US$2 trillion by 2030.
Notably, in recent years, Indonesia has demonstrated a pioneering role through significant initiatives in ASEAN digital development cooperation.
In 2023, the Central Statistics Agency of Indonesia (BPS) was selected by the United Nations as the regional hub for big data and data science for Asia -Pacific , supporting the UN Global Platform. This is a milestone in strengthening Indonesia's digital leadership in this area.
Through BPS, Indonesia initiates various training and capacity building activities for digital statistics across ASEAN, while promoting a platform for sharing official statistical data and good practices among national statistical institutes.
Indonesia is by far the largest contributor to the ASEAN digital economy’s Gross Merchandise Value (GMV). The rapid growth of Indonesia’s digital startups has been a driving force for the entire bloc.
Ms. Meutya Hafid, Minister of Communications and Digital Affairs of Indonesia, emphasized that regional cooperation is key to ASEAN's digital transformation - and Indonesia plays a central role in promoting an inclusive and sustainable transformation.
The cooperation between Indonesia and ASEAN during 2019-2024 has been successful in strengthening digital data integration, expanding digital access and skills, building infrastructure, and establishing regulations and strategic cooperation.
These achievements create a solid foundation for the ASEAN digital economy to develop towards an inclusive and competitive future, where Indonesia not only contributes greatly but also pioneers in shaping a prosperous and equitable digital future for the entire region./.
