Iran said on December 28 that 2025 will be a crucial year for its nuclear issue, as Tehran prepares to deal with the possibility of US President-elect Donald Trump re-imposing a policy of "maximum pressure".
In 2018, Mr. Trump abandoned the deal signed by his predecessor Barack Obama in 2015, in which Iran agreed to limit its enrichment of uranium — a material that can be used for nuclear weapons — in exchange for the easing of economic sanctions by the United States and the United Nations.
"2025 will be a crucial year regarding Iran's nuclear issue," Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi told reporters in Beijing, adding that he had discussed the issue during talks with his Chinese counterpart.
However, the diplomat did not mention Mr. Trump by name or explain specifically the importance of 2025 for the Iran nuclear issue.
The main concern among the Islamic nation's leaders may be that Mr Trump will empower Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to attack Iran's nuclear facilities, while also further tightening US sanctions on Tehran's vital oil industry.
Earlier the same day, Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi held talks with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Beijing, during which the two sides agreed to step up the implementation of the comprehensive cooperation plan between the two countries.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that the successful meeting between the leaders of the two countries within the framework of the 16th BRICS Summit has set a strategic direction for deepening China-Iran relations.
Emphasizing the long-standing relationship and traditional friendship between the two peoples, Mr. Wang Yi affirmed that strengthening coordination and cooperation between China and Iran not only benefits the people of the two countries but also contributes to peace, stability and development of the region and the world.
The two sides need to continue to support each other on issues related to core interests, promote practical cooperation and strengthen multilateral cooperation.
Chinese Foreign Minister called for strengthening coordination within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and enhancing BRICS cooperation to better safeguard the common interests of developing countries.
For his part, Foreign Minister Araghchi stressed that developing and deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership with China is a priority in Iran's foreign policy. Tehran highly values Beijing's important role in maintaining justice in international affairs.
The two sides reached an agreement on promoting the implementation of the comprehensive cooperation plan and enhancing the exchange of management experience in the fields of politics, diplomacy, legislation, law enforcement, justice, economy and trade.
At the same time, the two countries will expand cooperation in the fields of youth, education, sports, science and technology, culture, tourism, environmental protection, health, radio and television, and promote people-to-people and local exchanges.
On the Iran nuclear issue, China affirmed that it always supports a political-diplomatic solution and maintains the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), opposes sanctions and pressure, and firmly supports Iran in protecting its legitimate rights.
