"The Sukhoi-35 fighter jets are technically acceptable to Iran and Iran has completed the contract to purchase these aircraft," IRIB television quoted Iran's mission to the United Nations in New York as saying.

The IRIB report did not include any Russian confirmation of the deal, which did not provide details. The mission said Iran had also inquired about purchasing military aircraft from several other unnamed countries, the IRIB reported.
Iran's purchase of Russian fighter jets was first reported by the Semafor news website on Thursday.
Russian President Vladimir Putin met Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran last July, underscoring closer ties in the face of Western pressure over the war in Ukraine.
Iran has admitted sending drones to Russia but says they were sent before Russia attacked Ukraine last year. Moscow denies its forces used Iranian-made drones in Ukraine.
Iran's air force has just a few dozen attack aircraft, including Russian jets as well as older American models purchased before the 1979 Iranian revolution.
In 2018, Iran said it had begun production of its domestically designed Kowsar fighter jet for use in its air force. Some military experts believe the jet is a copy of the F-5, which was first produced in the United States in the 1960s.
