VnExpressVnExpress31/10/2023

The Israeli military and intelligence announced the rescue of a female soldier from Hamas in a night raid on the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli Defense Ministry and the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) announced today that they had rescued Corporal Ori Megidish in an overnight ground operation in the Gaza Strip the day before.

Megidish, stationed at the Nahal Oz base, was taken hostage by Hamas gunmen in a surprise attack on October 7. Israeli officials said she had met her family and was in good health, but did not provide further details about the rescue.

Hamas has not commented on the information.

According to the Israeli military, around 230 hostages have been held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip since the October 7 attack, including Israeli citizens, foreigners and dual nationals. Hamas has released four on “humanitarian grounds” and said nearly 50 hostages have been killed in Israeli raids over the past three weeks.

Israel has recently launched localized attacks on the Gaza Strip to search for hostages and wear down enemy forces.

The operation intensified on October 27, when the Israeli military stepped up airstrikes and sent troops and tanks into the Gaza Strip, focusing on targeting infrastructure, including Hamas’ tunnel network. However, the Israeli Defense Ministry said this was not the full-scale ground operation it had planned.

The fighting left more than 9,400 people dead and more than 25,600 injured on both sides.
