Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman Daniel Hagari said they had received “credible intelligence” that Hamas “held hostages at Al Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis.”

The IDF also claimed that Hamas militants were hiding inside the facility, but did not provide evidence to support this allegation.

A Hamas spokesman rejected the IDF's claim, calling it a "lie."

Aid group Medecins Sans Frontieres said it had been informed by hospital staff of “chaos” at Al Nasser hospital, “with an unknown number of dead and injured”.

The Israeli military’s attack on Al Nasser Hospital on February 15 came hours after the IDF ordered thousands of civilians to leave the area. A day earlier, a fire at the hospital killed one patient and injured seven others.

Palestinian Health Authority spokesman Ashraf Al Qedra said the IDF military operation forced hospital management to provide intensive care to patients without medical equipment. The evacuation of patients and medical staff from the hospital early on February 15 was carried out “under conditions of bombardment and threats.”

Israel has frequently accused Hamas of seeking to use hospitals as a haven for its militants and claims that Hamas has set up command centers under medical facilities. The Israeli military recently said its forces had arrested several suspects at Al Nasser Hospital.

The latest Israeli airstrikes come after warnings from global leaders that Israel should not launch a military offensive in the city of Rafah, where an estimated 1.5 million displaced Gazans have sought shelter. Israeli forces had previously directed civilians to flee to Rafah, which borders Egypt.

About 80% of Gaza's 2.3 million population have been displaced in the more than four-month war launched by Israel in response to a cross-border Hamas offensive into its territory on October 7.

Israeli officials say about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, were killed in the Hamas offensive, while about 250 were taken hostage.

According to Palestinian health authorities, at least 28,600 people have been killed in Israel's retaliatory offensive so far. Israel has said it will not give in until it eliminates Hamas and secures the release of all remaining hostages.
