Israel builds road with wireless charging for electric vehicles

Báo Nhân dânBáo Nhân dân04/11/2024

Israel's Transport Ministry said in a statement on November 3 that the country's first wireless charging road, which allows electric vehicles to charge their batteries while driving, will be built in the northern coastal city of Haifa.

The wireless charging technology - developed by Israeli high-tech company Electreon Wireless - relies on special copper coils placed just below the road surface, allowing vehicles to charge their batteries while on the move.

Electreon will partner with state-owned transport project company Trans Israel to build wireless charging tracks along the “Metronit” network – five rapid bus lines connecting Haifa to neighboring cities, with a total length of 104km. The buses will pass through 16 charging segments installed along the network, each 100 metres long.

Electreon will be responsible for implementing and maintaining the project for 12 months, with a total budget of 15.8 million shekels (about $4.23 million), including an option to extend it for another 2 years if the project expands.

According to the Israeli Ministry of Transport, the wirelessly charged buses are expected to save money, improve service quality, and reduce air pollution. At the same time, the technology will allow for the use of smaller bus batteries, saving more money and reducing the load on the power grid.

Electreon has signed agreements with China, the US, Germany, France, Sweden and Italy to launch pilot projects to build wireless charging routes.
