Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto told reporters that the ship was brought under control shortly and that all crew members were safe. The Turkish-flagged cargo ship Galata Seaways, with 22 crew members, departed Topcular, Turkey, on June 7 and was headed to Sète, southern France. About 15 people boarded the ship secretly in Turkey, hoping to reach Europe, but were discovered by the crew. The captain called Turkey and alerted Italian authorities to request emergency assistance.
