On June 25, Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said that Rome "will do everything for Ukraine to join the European Union (EU)," if Kiev complies with EU rules and implements reforms.
Speaking to Il Messaggero, Deputy Prime Minister Tajani said: "We will do everything possible to make Ukraine join the EU. Of course, on condition that Kiev complies with EU rules and carries out the necessary reforms, such as in the fight against corruption.
We hope to be able to quickly admit Ukraine, like the Western Balkan countries."
Asked whether Rome would support Kiev's entry into NATO, Tajani pointed to the need for a "step-by-step" approach. "The first step would be the creation of the Ukraine-NATO Council and then the consideration of the country's admission after the end of the conflict," he said.
Italy's top diplomat added that he welcomed diplomatic efforts by the Vatican and Turkey to reach a peaceful solution.
At the same time, he noted that for Rome "there is only a just peace, which implies the restoration of Ukraine's territorial integrity."
At the European Council Summit held in Reykjavík (Iceland) on May 16, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also spoke out to ensure support for Ukraine on its path to joining the European Union (EU).
Speaking at the opening of the conference, Prime Minister Scholz stressed that he wanted to ensure that Ukraine's EU accession process would be accelerated and that the policy would also apply to the two Western Balkan countries of Moldova and Georgia.
